Time frame is everything. Would rather have GC or one of those dry as chip chicken patties from the BI?ASU-FTW wrote:You ate at Golden Corral to escape crap campus food? A lot of good memories for sure...

In general I prefer to patronize local places, especially in Boone. But chains have their place. You know what you're going to get and for folks with children like myself sometimes it's just easier. That said, GC is a bottom feeder even among chains IMO. Not sorry to see it go.

Rumor around Boone is that someone was dipping and that's been said for a long time before they closed it down. Just a rumor but there are plenty of restaurants in Boone far less busy that are still open. No one will really know why. It just is.
I think if it was just "dipping" the company would have taken it over.
The difference with Golden Corral is that they have to cook a huge amount of food even with a few customers. They can reheat some items but then the quality suffers.
Golden Corrals are hurting many places especially smaller towns (many have went out of business). Their "AYCE" model only works with huge volume.
The only reason many are open is because franchisee are selling their franchises back to the company and they can afford to keep them open to sell more franchises.

Re: Golden Corral in Boone
That's why it's called a rumor. I live here and it's been talked about for at least two years. And I can give you several examples of companies who have optioned to close or take away a franchise (same difference unless they have another ready to pony up the money) rather than buy it themselves, from restaurants to Radio Shack's, especially in smaller markets. I never said it was happening, only that it's been talked about in the Boone circle for a while. That's what happens when you were born and raised in a small town. You tend to know a lot of long time locals who have run the place for years. May not agree with them but you do know them.Maddog1956 wrote:

And honestly I couldn't care less right now. Got too much on my mind. And in Boone when one closes another will take it's place. Always does.

GC reeks of old people smell, and unwashed feet and ass. Same food every day just reheated under light bulbs. YUCK!

Re: Golden Corral in Boone
I don't care for GC and honestly never even noticed there was on in Boone, it wasn't there when I was in school, but the conversation about local vs chain restaurant reminded me of a running joke my wife and I have. She likes to watch that show Diners, Drive-in, and Dives where he goes around to all these little local places and samples the food and talks to customers. The customers are always raving about how great and different the place is from anything else out there. But watch three or four of those shows back to back and notice how alike all those places are. You'll see the same decor, menus items, etc over and over and over. There really aren't that many truly unique places. Which is not to knock local places by any means, all else being equal I tend to patronize them as much if not more than the chains, and there are some great local places in Boone with out a doubt. I just think its funny.

LOL...you should have heard the wails of despair that came from the direction of BR the night Boone voted in LBTD. From many places.PBR1893-BEER-HAT-GUY wrote:watch for outback to relocate to gc building...they are trying to get out of blowing rock i understand...

I hope they don't, I like having them next to the Woodlands so they can take the tourist away. It can still be a 45 minute wait some nights, but other nights if there isn't a game going usually you can walk right in now.PBR1893-BEER-HAT-GUY wrote:watch for outback to relocate to gc building...they are trying to get out of blowing rock i understand...

In this economy, I hate to see employees lose their jobs. Even if some other business takes its place, there is a lag time between closing and the opening of a new business.
What I hate about places like Golden Corral is watching all the obese customers eating many times what they should be eating simply because they can eat all they want.

Don't get me started on the BR Outback. Every time I went (when I got gift cards from an office BDay party or on free Bloomin' Onion night), they screwed something up. One time we watched all night as the manager literally went from table to table apologizing for stuff.
Franchise restaurants are garbage. Give me Black Cat, Comeback Shack, Peppers, Coyote Kitchen ect any day of the week.

Outback's everywhere have went to crap. That use to be our "go to place" for b'day, etc when not in Boone. The last few times I've been to one, it was over priced and just average food.Gonzo wrote:Don't get me started on the BR Outback. I'm ok with chain's if they are good citizens, but there is just so much remote management (owners, investors).
