Well SHE better be a football fan.

Not too crazy about her education background. Business minds have gotten us this far.
She's from Nebraska, she has to be. She even mentioned looking forward to the Michigan game.

I like a lot of what I read in the ASU announcement: education background; taught in middle & high school along with college; and her husband a former college president. She seems to have all the things we are looking for and fits our plans for the future. Maybe she can get some of the Doctoral programs so many of us would like to see App grant.
I have been in Normal, Illinois. Boone will be a move up for her.

reading her bio, couple of questions come to mind, 1. the obvious question, will she continue and expand Peacocks vision that sports must play a vital role in our University moving forward, and 2. she doesn't seem to have much experience fundraising at the alumi level, and securing funds at the state level, can she become a politician, form a network at the state level to make sure we can compete with the NC, States of the world to get our fair share of state funding.

I must say, I was rather underwhelmed by her acceptance speech. Definitely will give her a chance to lead and judge based on merit, just not a great 1st impression for me. While I understand the academic background, I was really hoping the new Chancellor would have some type of business background that compliments her academic qualifications. The business mindset, in my opinion, would prepare her with the experience needed to "Sell" Appalachain to both fundraisers/Prospective Students and most importantly the UNC BOG which she will have to directly compete with to pull funding away from UNC / NCSU.

We truly have been spoiled by Chancellor Peacock. He is going to be greatly missed and has left some HUGE shoes to fill.

Like the fact she is from the Midwest. Seems like a safe hire who won't ruffle many feathers and appease a lot of factions on campus. Interesting we hire someone with a education background given the university has been moving towards the business side.

Illinois State is much like Appalachian. It began as a teacher's college but has grown beyond that. So far, I like what I see from her.

Like AppDawg, I was "I was rather underwhelmed" at first because it seemed like we were getting someone to help us "be something we know how to be" (teachers college) instead of what we need to become.

However if she was involved with making illinois State "beyond that", she may be what we need. It's really hard to know much from a bio (heck, even I can make mine sound half way good) so I think I'll just have to see.

Did anyone notice in the press release on the front page of the ASU website that it listed her age as 55 and then listed the four adult children her and her husband have? What caught my eye was the age of that oldest child; 41. Either they have the age wrong (probably not likely since they are listed in ascending age order), or they have a "blended" family of his/hers/their chicldren (most probably the answer) or she started having children at 14. Again, the way it was woirded, "Together, they have four adult children, Elizabeth, 27; Justin, 29; Olin, 36, and Kris, 41.) lends me to think a blended family is the answer.

I would agree, I also two are very close in age.

Jay Noren is 69 so it makes sense that the oldest and maybe next-oldest is from a previous relationship.

Also found out that Dr Everts is a breast cancer survivor.

One thing I noticed is that she and I are the same age. Chancellors of great universities like App are supposed to be older than I am.

Gonzo and KGFISH later:

In today's climate she better be able to build relationships. The reason KP was so successful was his ability to build relationships ACROSS backgrounds. And to assume that a person with an education background has no business acumen is erroneous. ...and you think she has no business background. Being the Provost and now the chancellor of any University is big business. Actually, the background in English may be of more benefit in creating arguable positions than a business background.

How 'bout we give the lady a shot!

To ALL:
....i knew from the second I read her bio we were going to have this argument.

I didn't mean to imply I was writing her off. Aside from that concern I'm optimistic. She seems like the type that can connect with students, something Peacock was so great at.

And the football shout outs at the beginning of her speech are at the very least an indication she's in touch with the culture of the school.

Not thrilled at all with the choice but let's see where it goes. Peacock was an insider, now we have an outsider and I have no idea what to expect. UNC leadership made the right decision last time, hopefully we strike gold again.

I hope that a newspaper inteviews her soon, ask some tough questions, and we get an idea of how she plans to lead our University. Right now she is a total mystery to me, makes me alittle nervous, hopefully in the next few weeks we will have a better idea about her.

Going in with a clean slate. Two things I want to see are the ability to find raise and the ability to push professional degrees with the powers that be.
