Never went there, but it's a crowded restaurant scene. Knights on Main in BR just closed as did a couple other local BR places.
AFAIK, IHOP is going into the former Blockbuster. Zaxby's is going in near the driving range on 105. Chipotle's opened in front of Lowe's Hardware a few weeks ago and Waffle House opened in the late fall across from McDonald's.

Bed and breakfasts cater to an entirely different crowd than hotel franchises. The latter it is necessary to support the high country tourism infrastructure. My interest is that of the town of Boone in this situation. Just look what at your beloved Tar Heels if you want to see how a college town can gradually shift into an everytown. Franklin St has a few good bars left, but for the most part it's become the same strip mall you can find anywhere across the country.

Not sure i see the issue with some decent franchises in with the local flavor, different strokes for different folks. These take away nothing from the "culture" only add to the options. If a local is good enough to stand on its own, then it has no concern at all.Gonzo wrote:Some people used to serve on commitees with High Country Host. I realize many of these places provide products at a lower cost than local businesses. I also realize that national businesses are now a necessity in certain arenas (ex: banks). That said, these businesses provide far less work (and less good work) than local options. Local businesses provide jobs for their owner/operators. They also need local skilled employees (or local consultants and contractors like accountants and lawyers) to handle various administrative tasks; national businesses handle these in large out of state centers. Local businesses are also more likely to purchase supplies from local growers and manufacturers, as opposed to national companies that strike a few big deals with gigantic farms and manufacturing companies.AppGrad1 wrote:According to some people's logic they should also close;

Fast food, Wal-Mart, and the like are largely responsible the break-down of small towns. They have no need for skilled or educated people - only low-wage service employees. They are pushing all of our talented young people into cities; and the primary beneficiaries of these businesses are billionaires whose charitable enterprises are more likely to fund another art museum in New York instead, instead of an upgrade for 30 small town libraries.

Re: Boone Ruby Tuesday's closes.
It's hard to make an argument that the locals are being hurt when the thread is about the latest of several national chains going out of business. There have been some local places go out of business over the years, but most of those were due to either poor management or poor quality. It's tough to survive in the restaurant business no matter where you are.

However, you either jump on board in this world or get left behind. Many students choose colleges by what is offered not only in the school but the community also.
I'm not saying they make choices on if there is a Wal-Mart or not but it sure doesn't hurt.
If you look from a student's standpoint they probably like all the businesses Boone has to offer. It's the older folk that want to preserve it.

Losing Ruby Tuesday doesn't bother me since I never ate there while I was in school. Hopefully the town will find some good replacement candidates that will have more success.

You're saying all the right things, but somehow you still reach the wrong conclusion. There are plenty of students that seek out a school like App because of its one-of-a-kind appeal. In fact, I'd say a great majority prefer meals at Coyote Kitchen to Chili's. That kind of choice is what makes Boone/App State so unique.AppGrad1 wrote:I do not dispute this at all. I actually didn't like most of the local places around boone. DBI wasn't exactly high quality food. I knew some guys who were cooks there and could tell you there was nothing special about that place. I didn't really like Coyote Kitchen. Honestly I didn't like anything on their menu. Black Cat is ok but its a niche place. I ate at Chili's over the CK. The Stinkin Rose/Portafinos was one of my preferred places. I ate a ton at Los and Dos. The Boone Bagelry was fine just over priced. There are a few good local spots in Boone but most are no better or even worse in some cases than the chain places. I found I got more consistent food quality at the chain places.

To each they're own of course. But I think you would be in the extreme minority in your preferences. Coyote Kitchen is one of the best restaurants in North Carolina. That's not just my opinion but Our State magazine's.appdaze wrote:Gonzo wrote:

You should try Proper and Cobo (if you like sushi) next time you head to Boone. Both relatively new.
Side note: IMO the major chains in Boone are particularly bad, even among the same restaurant franchise. I had a gift card to Applebee's a few years ago. I went with a few buddies and my girlfriend. We only intended to get alcohol but decided to get dinner there as well. I advised my girlfriend to get the chicken fingers because how could you screw up chicken fingers? When she got them they were literally frozen in the middle. I'm sure that's not the typical experience, but it was certainly enough to validate my already low opinion of those kind of restaurants.
Another time I had an Outback gift card. (Same office birthday party. You know how those go.) we went to the one in Blowing Rock. We were seated for about 15 minutes before the manager finally came over and asked us if we been served yet. We told her no and she happily gave us a free blooming onion, which was great. But as we sat for the rest of the meal I observed her literally going from table to table apologizing to people for things the entire time we were there. It was extraordinary.
