I did not like the We-We-Welcome t-t-t-to th-th-the R-R-R-Rock part. Maybe an exaggeration but my recollection is there was some kind of stutter effect.3rd wrote:The Sean Connery line is iconic for the 50 and over crowd. It had no energy? It was the same intro just someone different saying "Welcome to the Rock". Not being able to hear it? yea once again not his fault. It was blamed, along with the black block A as being the reason we were losing. That is why most hated it.APPdiesel wrote:To me it honestly doesn't matter that he gives money. That shouldn't guarantee you a spot on the video board pre game. You couldn't hear it, it had no energy, and a decent number of people didn't even know who he was. The Sean Connery line is iconic...so why have some other guy re-record his line?3rd wrote:So yall do understand that at the end of his video he says "Welcome to the Rock" and before that it has him and his band playing in the back ground with highlights from the past and DJ's voice over the highlights (just like all the other videos before the team runs out). I don't understand why people would rather see a guy who hasn't given a dime to the university or even seen a game in person over an alum that came to the athletics dept, produced the video himself, comes to football games and could be very valuable to the national marketing campaign for Appalachian. But we as fan turned him away b/c his intro videos made us lose. I don't get it. Did people hate it b/c they couldn't hear it?
Can't wait until football when we have something more important than sizzle reels to talk about.

The video board and sound system need to be on the short list to be replaced. I watched the video right after they released it online and you could hear it. I haven't been able to "hear" SC in the stands for a while.[/quote]

In my humble opinion that the reason that SC can't be audibly heard is the rushing of the pyrotechnics. the"Welcome to the Rock" is overwhelmed by the sound of the booms.

Re: what are your thoughts on this Eric Church article
As far as I'm concerned, the Sean Connery opening has become a tradition. Also, it's completely irrelevant to say who has given money to the school when talking about an opening video at football games. How much money did ACDC give App State? Why should we play Hells Bells when gates open for students?
Also, it's crap that Eric Church likes UNC. Sorry. But it is for anyone that's graduated from App State.
He's one of the most famous country music stars in the country so I think we should leverage his brand with ours for notoriety and other financial benefits.
Keep Sean Connery. It's become a cool tradition.

Yeah, I didn't get it. Let's grab this Scottish guy that thinks football means "no hands." Oh well. Only in sports will something so small become reason enough for people to rant and rave to the PTB. And, if SC has become a tradition, that hasn't been around as long as the yellow color on our jerseys...so, I'd say that's a tradition now too.................3rd wrote:So yall do understand that at the end of his video he says "Welcome to the Rock" and before that it has him and his band playing in the back ground with highlights from the past and DJ's voice over the highlights (just like all the other videos before the team runs out). Who said it didn't work?T-Dog wrote:You can do a nice thing, but it doesn't mean it'll work. Eric Church saying "Welcome the the Rock" didn't work. I know a lot of people, both on payroll and not, are sore about the negative reaction to it.
I get why they're sore, the negative reaction was ridiculous. Again, oh well. The Rock doing the intro would be pretty awesome!

I prefer to stick with Sean Connery, but i think it might work if we played a video (or audio) of The Rock saying "Can you smmeeelllll what The Rock is cookin?" either just before kickoff each half, after big defensive stop, or when we score. Don't over use it, but do it for one of those situations.ASUMountaineer wrote:Who said it didn't work?T-Dog wrote:You can do a nice thing, but it doesn't mean it'll work. Re: what are your thoughts on this Eric Church article
I'm not sure why it has to be an all or nothing proposition. I personally like the iconic Sean Connery line, and it is recognizable by a larger fan base. Relegating it to old guys (of which I am one) is inaccurate. Relegating Eric Church to country fans it not entirely fair either, but closer than the other. Eric Church could still be a part of the opening video and retain Connery's "Welcome to the Rock!" at the end.
I am disappointed the article failed to mention where he went to school, but not surprised. We all know Carolina basketball fans that are alumni of App State. ECU, Charlotte, they suffer the same fate; it's the nature of Carolina having the Wal-Mart fan base. I worked in Birmingham, AL for a while, and UAB fans bemoaned the same predicament with their alumni following Alabama football.
