Re: Timeline for getting AD candidates
Mike Buddie has an outstanding background and a lot of support within the Wake Forest community. I knew him during the early part of his pro baseball career and he always came across as a stand-up, first-class individual. The folks who know him today say he hasn't changed.

Re: Timeline for getting AD candidates
I am a good friend of Ron Weelman AD at Wake forest. Ron is probably one of the top ADs in the country. He told me that Mike Buddy was by far rhe best assistant AD he had ever worked with and he highly recommended him. Said he would hate to lose him but Mike Really wanted the job. Re Rick, he is a great guy but in my opinion would be a huge mistake at this critical time in our transition. ALL Rick knows is ASU. The majority of his career was running a very small town as manager. I believe he would be a Roachel clone. He would be a good day to day administrator but would lack drastically in the areas of leadership, vision and peer contacts all around the country. The next 10 years are going to cast our future for the next 30 years. A screwup in this hire and we are in deep do do. We don't need to be inbreed in this position at this critical time. And as an aside ,I think it is a huge conflict of interest to have some of Rick's current subordinates on the committee. Whoever put this group together was smoking something when it came the the size and makeup of this committee. I hope we get this right so I don't have to lead a new crusade to fire somebody. Gettin' too old for that.

Re: Timeline for getting AD candidates
Putting together a 19-person committee, some of which were basically tasked with hiring their new boss, only to have then hire a search firm seems like wanting to go from Boone to Blowing Rock by driving around Grandfather Mountain.

Re: Timeline for getting AD candidates
I agree the make up of the committee including so many future direct reports and indirect reports is a mistake, but the decision will be made by the chancellor and blessed by the BOT.
I also agree this is a very important hire to shape our future. Whoever the choice is I will support them as that is the only option I have as an alum and fan. In turn I will hold them accountable for progress measured by success on the filed/court, success in the classroom, and success financially to provide our student athletes and fans the tools they need while reducing the percentage of the budget that comes from student fees. A job that will be difficult no doubt about it.

Well then I guess it really doesn't matter who we hire. Our track record seems to show that our ADs don't do the hiring anyway. Rick didn't hire Fox, Charlie didn't hire Bozo, and the other guy so instead of an AD why don't we just hire the people that matter a secretary and save a lot of money?

That's a tad dramatic. Charlie interviewed and offered the job to Jim Fox. Was Coach McKillop influential in helping Fox get the job? Sure.bcoach wrote:Well then I guess it really doesn't matter who we hire. Our track record seems to show that our ADs don't do the hiring anyway. Rick Beasley interviewed and offered the job Angel. Were there other coaches that did the same for her? Almost certainly.
At the end of the day, we need an upgrade in the AD's office in just about every way. My hope is that whatever happens, David Jackson stays on. He's irreplaceable.

Re: Timeline for getting AD candidates
The challenge for me is that it's hard to separate an assistant AD from what their boss did. Take Buddie. I know roachgone said Wellman is a friend, but there's a reason Wake fans were buying billboards demanding he be fired a couple years back. Wake's revenue sports have been terrible for years, WBB and baseball aren't much better, and the Jeff Bzdelik fiasco was an embarrassment of cronyism that set their basketball program back years.
So if I were interviewing Buddie, I'd need to find a reason to believe the he'd manage those major sports at App far better than his boss has done in the last decade or so at Wake. What's the point of all the fundraising and facilities enhancement in the world if your teams are awful?
By contrast, everywhere Girton and Hyman have been, they have been a huge success. But could she replicate that success (on a smaller scale, of course) if she were the one in charge? That's the tough question to answer.

Re: Timeline for getting AD candidates
I am not the one who keeps insisting all our coaches are hired by the people who matter. I was really making the point that if there really is that much outside influence then what we really need is someone who has a pair. I will say that my opinion is that if there really is that much outside influence Rick probably is not the guy.APPARJ wrote:That's a tad dramatic. Charlie interviewed and offered the job to Jim Fox. I agree that DJ is VERY important to the program and I would hope anyone who is hired would see that.

I agree that DJ needs to stay and that whomever is hired makes that one of the priorities. He bleeds Black and Gold and is one of the best assets and ambassadors for ASU that has ever graced the campus. Just my $0.02 worth.
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

Re: Timeline for getting AD candidates
I've heard Buddie would be an excellent hire.
There were a lot of things going on behind the scenes that led to the Bzdelik hire. Buddie is not to be blamed for that.
Buddie was very instrumental in the hire of Dave Clawson, and is supposed to be a great fundraiser.

Genuinely curious (because I think it's so important to the App State job), who told you he was a great fundraiser?

Don't have anyone in particular. I'm a fan of Wake as well, I live in WS and work at the school of medicine, so I just hear things from lots of different people. I know people in all areas of the university (athletics and general college) and just hear stuff in different conversations.APPARJ wrote:dubs21 wrote:I've heard Buddie would be an excellent hire.

Re: Timeline for getting AD candidates
I have a lot of mixed emotions about this hire. One statement made by a member of this forum that sticks with me is that "we'd better get this hire right." That's a dead-serious and accurate statement.
In Rick's case, it's awfully hard to go from peer, co-worker and social scene pal to The Big Cheese. At some point, the two very opposite relationships are going to come into a gravitational or situational clash. It invites dysfunction in an organization. Someone gets treated as a favorite; someone else gets a reprimand or a "no" answer to a reasonable request. Then the internal wars begin. Red flag! Not to mention the huge and APPsolute conflict of interest concerning the membership of the search committee.
In Buddie's case, I've learned in the last couple of days that he was passed over for the AD's position at The Citadel and that he actively campaigned for the AD's position at Chattanooga and "chose" to remove his name from consideration when he learned that someone else was going to be hired. That's another red flag!
That leaves Marcey Girton! Let's do it! She has clearly better credentials and more direct experience than any of the other "remaining" finalists (if the names that have been leaked are accurate).
It's a no-brainer considering the pool of finalists and current circumstances. The question in my mind is whether we can/will offer a compensation "package and contract" that will lure her to The High Country.

Chuck I just used your post to attach to......NOT second guessing......it just seemed like one of the most logical posts to attach to with something I have LIVED.asu66 wrote:I have a lot of mixed emotions about this hire. IF this is the direction this goes....we can't get mad at who stays and who goes.....and I PROMISE EVERYONE on here that some true BLACK&GOLD bleeders will be asked/encouraged to leave or just go.....I have lived this and SOME history is a good thing and almost necessary to keep from "stepping" in it.
All I saying is be careful.
Go APPS!

and that post is pretty arrogant BEFORE we even get our next AD.
If you got so much power open your pocketbook and influence the hire.
I trust the system until the system can't do the job....and an opinion about a hire prior to the hire getting a chance to work is just wrong. EVEN if it were you who were named AD.

The only issue with the next AD is the relationship with the new Chancellor. . Then it comes down to the two making good decisions for App State.
Good luck to both of them and the rest of us who bleed black and gold

Any word on when the announcement will be made? Is anybody hearing rumor of who the front runner is?
This is an incredibly important hire that we cannot afford to mess up.

Re: Timeline for getting AD candidates
I agree, although we may not know if it was the right hire until a couple years down the road when we see how much progress we have made. New plans and directions take a while for which to analyze the results.8993 wrote:Any word on when the announcement will be made? Is anybody hearing rumor of who the front runner is?
