Shell dogs with loose change.Lowcountry App wrote: ↑Tue May 27, 2025 7:40 pmWhen I was a student there was a gas station on BR Rd that sold 3 hot dogs for 99 cents. Wouldn’t pass sanitation codes now but back in the early 80s it was a great deal for a poor college student. No telling what the hell was in those dogs and I really don’t want to know.

lot of great memories in this thread, especially Sollecitos.
I'm often wrong but I remember the Shell dogs as 4 for a dollar.

I may have missed that place or it was gone by the mid 90s when I was there for grad school.
Sounds like my kind of bargain since I was borrowing money to go to school.

Re: Boone Restaurants Closing
I certainly don't remember it in the mid 90s and as cheap as myself and friends were, we would have known. We used to live off of the .10 cent hamburgers at the McDonalds. They limited you to 10 per person. So we'd go through the drive through and then go in for 10 more each. Few days of dorm fridge burgers.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Thu May 29, 2025 2:24 pmUh, oh ..the tall tale stories get larger every time they are told. I still miss the Double Bacon Cheeseburgers from the BI (Bavarian Inn) as well as the East and West Wing of Welborne Cafeteria. I miss the Sweet Shop and Gold Room as well.

Inflation moves fast. I remember them being 3 for a buck in the early 90’s.Captain Morgan wrote: ↑Thu May 29, 2025 1:45 pmlot of great memories in this thread, especially Sollecitos.

That brought back some memories. The BI had the coldest chocolate milk I've ever tasted. I never ate much in the east wing of the cafeteria. I remember that was where the football team ate. If I'm not mistaken, the sweet shop was on the right when you entered the student union on the library side.

Everybody was broke back then…especially at the end of spring semester, right?Lowcountry App wrote: ↑Thu May 29, 2025 5:23 pmGood to hear my roommate and I weren’t the only ones eating the Shell dogs.
My roommate would go to Boone Bagel and get three dozen bagels and see how far he could stretch them, because money was so tight.

We waited until the end of the semester when I friends that were girls that hadn’t used their meal plan money needed to use it up on those of us who had used it all prematurely.

The Shell dogs were always 3 for a $ standard, but on special they were sometimes 4 for a $. Somewhat of a late night staple for me.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Thu May 29, 2025 2:24 pmUh, oh ..the tall tale stories get larger every time they are told. Was the BI below the cafeteria? I can't remember where it was, but I do remember the rubber pizza.

Working my way through college with a somewhat full time night job, I always had a little cash to buy meal tickets from the ladies looking for beer or gas money so the Gold Room for lunch was a regular thing. At half price, or better. Breakfast in the cafeteria wasn’t bad either. Good times.

The BI was below the Welborne Cafeteria; the Food Court took its place.
