This is a prime example of stupidity and lack of understanding.. What you need to do is the next time someone make a joke about blacks is stand up and say it's wrong...unless you don't think so and that my friend speaks to the problem. You just don't get it.

I don't have white guilt, am a card carrying Republican and am tired of the seeming lack of empathy or understanding of what it is to be a minority.
Don't you think its worth finding out if what this guy is saying is true?
Okay. One quick question...How?

It's a story that can't be proven or disproven.
I'd start with an interview of the RA then I'd interview every minority that wanted to be interviewed. If there is overt racism on campus I'd want to know and figure out a way to stomp it out. Do you think every black student would lie about it? I sure don't.
Oh, you're talking big picture. I thought you were talking about the incident described by the RA. Okay. I want every student to feel, wanted.

I wouldn't go with everyone that wants to be interviewed, but a random sample.

I lived in Boone for 6 years as a student, then as a professional, and never once heard a white person use a racial slur to a black person. If I did it would have shocked my conscience, even more than it would in any other context. Boone is one of the most liberal (I'm using it in a good way this time) and accepting places on the planet, by my observation.

If some ass hole were to do that, I'd expect it be some drunk at a bar like T-dog described. There is no way this kid was heckled with N-words as he walked across the Walmart parking lot.

Also, if this happened in Boone I (and many others on MMB) would've at least heard stories about it and especially from my black friends.

Unless I hear or read otherwise, I'm counting this as a manufactured controversy to push an agenda and solve a problem that doesn't exist in Boone.

Also, those retention rates are really telling.

If I judged every town based on what I've seen and heard at Walmart my assessment would be out there as well.

Time to move on.

I believe he's definitely exaggerating this Wal-Mart story. It would surprise me if one time one person used a racial slur towards him. I am skeptical that it was multiple people and his first trip.

I will say this, a black friend of mine told me about an instance where she went to the McAllister's in the student union and the person working the counter refused to take her order. This was a student worker being overtly racist and I'm class of 2012 so it's not like this is ancient history. As I said previously, I think this approach lacked tact, but I think a broader, honest, thoughtful discussion would be nice. Although I'm admittedly doubtful that white people are willing to have it.

Are you talking to me??? Evidently you know nothing about me. I taught in a school which was 80% minority. I took up for many a black student when he/she was slurred and also took up for a white kid who was beaten up by a gang of black kids and he ended up with two days hospital stay as a result. The white kid was traumatized so badly that he wouldn't come to school for a month or so afterward. Tragically, racism works both ways.

I'm attempting to get an idea when this incident supposedly took place. The RA stated it was his first week here (in Boone), it take that to mean his first week as a freshman. Correct me if I'm wrong, but RA's are not usually freshmen. In most cases they are upper class persons. Therefore, putting two and two together I'd say the supposed incident took place a few years back. Therefore, taking everything into account, why did the RA stick around another 3 years or so? Personally, if I'm in a situation like that, I'm gone after the first semester. Anyway, like some have already stated, time to close this thread and move on.

My daughter was an RA her first year at UNC-C, however she transferred in from a CC.

Off topic - how does your daughter feel about UNCC football? I have no idea when she was there and how connected she is to the campus now, but just curious on my end.

She likes football as she was a cheerleader for 12 years but has attended more Appalachian State football games the last 2 years than I have. She, her husband and another couple sit in the nosebleed section on the East Side, gratis.
As far as how connected she is to UNC-C, she hasn't been on the 49'er campus for a few years now except when she supervised UNC-C student teachers in our county part time a while back. She is busy raising 3 children working full time, active in her church, and helping her husband on the family farm.

I've been following the fallout from this. Apparently there's been a number of racist posts on Yik Yak (Google it if you don't know what it is) against both sides. There was a Facebook post by the a group called the Appalachian Social Justice Educators warning people of color against going out alone for the next few days due to the threatening Yak's, claiming there was "racism that is rampant in our community and university". That sparked a firestorm of comments.

It's a no-win situation for either side at this point. Either you're a racist who doesn't check their privileged, or you're a race-baiter who is trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.

I'm guessing the white kid should have developed a thicker skin then? Yes I was talking to you. Yes I do believe I know you.

It takes a lot of gall to outright call him a liar and say he needs a thicker skin. The same people saying he needs a thicker skin are the ones who are offended by a bulletin board that was stating facts. "But, but the bulletin board was accusatory, and well... Uhhh I can't say the N-word but they can say cracker.... Waaah, double standard waaah".

You have absolutely no regard for context if you feel this way and clearly just want to be offended.

While you pat yourself on the back for retention rates I think a bigger question is raised here. Is App the least diverse school in the UNC system? I wouldn't be surprised if it was.
