Passing of a true Mountaineer

Chancel was a true Mountaineer. You could count on seeing him at every game.
Mr. Chancel T. Brown of College Park Baptist Church entered in to the more immediate presence of our Lord and Savior. He passed away at home on May 30th, 2017. He was born in Allendale County, South Carolina on May, 12, 1932 to Bertha and Perry Brown. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Clyde Ransom Brown and Jessie Daniel Brown as well as his sisters Belle Lemons and Hilma Binkley. He is also survived by his wife Joan Wood Brown, sister Margaret Smith, and many beloved nieces and nephews. He and Joan were very close to the Troy and Vonnie Wood family.
Mr. Brown graduated from RJ Reynolds High School and held undergraduate and graduate degrees from Appalachian State University. As an undergraduate, he was a co-editor of the Sports page for "The Appalachian" student newspaper. He also was a past President of the Alumni Association for ASU. His love for ASU will endure through his benevolence to the university.
He served in the United States Army as an assistant Chaplain at the Walter Reed Army Hospital in Bethesda Maryland.
His passions in life were his wife Joan and being active in his church. He loved wood working and furniture making and was known for his wonderful handmade gifts. He was a weekly golfer and will be missed by his golfing buddies. But perhaps his favorite pastime was Appalachian State football. He rarely missed a game.
Mr. Brown was a life-long educator. He first taught 8th grade English at Clemmons Elementary School. Then he became the Principle at Prince Ibraham Elementary School. And he spent the last 18 years of his career as the Principle of the Old Town Elementary School. He touched many lives in this community.
Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, June 2nd at 1pm at College Park Baptist Church, 1701 Polo Rd. The family will recieve friends after the service. Vogler & Sons Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chancel and Joan Brown Educational Scholarship Fund at Appalachian State University.
