Just my opinion but a hockey team would be a major drain on the athletic department budget and would generate little interest.
I agree it would be expensive and not practical to add any time soon (let's revive the basketball program first) But I don't know about little interest. Hockey can be hard to follow on TV but in person, its a blast!
Baseball is my first love and love to watch all kinds of sports. But I will say that NHL Hockey is the best sport to witness live.
And playoff hockey is even better.
I currently live in Maine and have attended quite a few UMaine hockey games. Collegiate hockey is unreal. Nothing like hearing 500 students yell "sieve!" over and over after we scored a goal.

So I was actually president of the club team a billion years ago.

The team still exists, it had some serious financial issues a couple years ago but due to some solid leadership from basically a bunch of freshman and sophomores, was able to rise from the dead and is fully functional now.

A rink in Boone/surrounding area has been a dream as far back as I can remember. There used to be an old wooden barn in Spurce Pines but that’s well and gone. Winston-Salem was the closest real option in my time there, however the Coliseum has a limited period of ice, which makes year round scheduling impossible.

We used to skate outside up on Sugar on the 2/3 sheet that gave up there. For actual practice, it’s fairly useless due to lack of size and boards. But it made for some great photo ops and probably my favorite memories while on the team.

Lenoir considered building a rink back in ‘08 when they found out they were getting Google. I actually attended a city council meeting where they debated it on the site of the old mall. Shame that plan fell through.

I took in a first Rd playoff game between the Pens and Lightning and you are right about playoff hockey. If you ever get a chance to see take in a game in Tampa, I suggest it. They have Tesla coils in the rafters that generate their own lightning.

I got into Hockey when I attended the Miracle on Ice game in the Lake Placid Olympics in 1980. Over the years I've become a fan of the Hurricanes and the Penguins. I love playoff hockey. It reminds me of FCS playoff football, but more intense. I'd like to see us get a Varsity Hockey team but the timing and the money has to be right. I would support it If I'm still around at that time.

I went to the W-S Tbirds game last night. I saw a few App shirts and hats. Based on this solid market research I would think this would be a sure thing.

This thread is a strong reflection of the current state of our men's basketball program.

The two most recent additions to NCAA varsity hockey are Arizona State and Penn State. Both schools previously had stellar club programs with sound funding already in place. As well as rinks virtually on campus.

It took what I believe was a $20m donation for the Arizona State program to go varsity. Something similar for Penn State.

I fully believe it would be a success in Boone, but I don’t see it ever happening. There is only one NCAA program in the southeast, Alabama-Huntsville.

I guess Holmes Ctr could accommodate hockey. The costs would be the same as for other sports: travel, equipment (including uniforms) and scollys etc. Start up money would be major.

I appreciate the enthusiasm but there will be no way in hell we see ice hockey as a varsity sport with all the financial issues we have plus title IX. Money for facilities, coaches and COA will more than likely cause us to drop some sports.

For the time being I would agree with you.

Nothing beats Hockey. We have an SPHL team and I am both a season ticket holder and a sponsor. When I lived in Raleigh I was an off ice official for the ECHL, working Ice Caps games. Born and raised in Detroit watching Gordie and the boys. Played High school and then men's league till I was about 50-52. I would love to see some ASU club team games. Is there a schedule anywhere?

This will probably be your best bet:

https://www.facebook.com/Appalachian-St ... 444598449/

As a non NCAA program, App is D3 in the ACHA. Per the schedule there, their next game is in Greenville against ECU.

http://achahockey.org/statistics/1682-A ... ce_id=1152

Within the ACHA, which is the national governing body of collegiate club hockey, App is a member of the Blue Ridge Hockey Conference, which we've won twice.

Nice uniforms. Love seeing the block "A" front and center on the uniform.

Does anyone know if an App State Hockey Sweater (jersey) can be purchased? They look pretty cool.

Hockey in Huntsville is HUGE! Played in SilverSticks there and they had like 3 rinks in the city. I was shocked. If Huntsville can do it, Boone can do it.

When I was in Boone I saw one at the sports store in the mall. I don't think it's the current jersey though.

I’d recommend reaching out to the team via email.

Appstatehockey@gmail.com

Or Facebook.

The jerseys are not cheap, so in my experience we would only order enough to dress the team + a couple extras as needed. However it may be a nice fundraising opportunity for them.

Even club level collegiate hockey is expensive. Regular practice + a full schedule, travel, uniforms, refs, league dues, can push team expidentures quickly over $30k.

My recollection is we received $5k from the university the last year I was there, so the remainder is generated through donations, player dues, and the occasional unsanctioned keg party. (Just kidding. Maybe)

Played hockey growimg up due to my Dad growing up in Utica. Loved playing it, contemplated pursuing it, but couldnt see myself going to school in Minnesota or NE.

I struggle to catch a lot of regular season NHL, but I am all in on playoffs.
