I was deeply saddened tonight to receive notification that Dr. Ashby has passed away. As a freshman student athletic trainer I came to know and appreciate his wisdom, candor, and his wacko sense of humor. I also appreciated his care and concern for our athletes and his love of all things Appalachian. It is said that he told his daughter that she would not set her wedding date in the fall as he would not attend; he’d be on the sidelines with the Mountaineers. RIP Doc

I cant tell you how many times i went to the infirmary for an intramurals related bruise or bump, and left with a ice bag, a box of condums and a bottle of penicillin!
Thank you for looking out for us Doc, you were a good man!

While I never had to go see Doc Ashby my wife said pretty much the same thing. She would go see him with a sore throat and come out on the pill.iambhooper wrote: ↑Sun Feb 18, 2018 11:12 amI cant tell you how many times i went to the infirmary for an intramurals related bruise or bump, and left with a ice bag, a box of condums and a bottle of penicillin!

Great man. Seems like he was affiliated with University in some capacity for over 50 years?

Doc Ashby was indeed a good man who probably did more to prevent premature pregnancy in the '80's than most local health departments. Sinus infection...box of condoms.
You think any of this type of good will happens on campus with the current healthcare/insurance environment? Nope.

The night before the All Campus intramural football championship in 1973 I broke a little toe (hanging loose at a 90 degree angle) hitting a tv stand in the dark....couldnt hardly walk. First think in the am...cut class (surprise) and paid a visit to Doc. Shook his head, taped it back to the next toe gave me a crutch told me to stay off of it all day and ice it and then take a good pain pill an hour before the game............ Worked just fine! We won. Beat Mary Janes Children!
