New PhD program
Is this old news I have just missed or is this so new I am the first to post on here about this?
I was listening to WASU over the internet on the way home as I was not in the mood for an NPR fund drive and I thought I heard App State was granted approval to start a PhD program in psychology. This is to address the need in so many counties in the state with NO operating psychologists.

Re: New PhD program
It’s not a PhD (Dr of Phillosphy) it’s going to be a PsyD (Dr of Psychology). More emphasis on clinical and less on reasearch.

Re: New PhD program
That would make sense, especially given the reason given for granting the program, which is to get psychologists into the field.

Behavioral health specialists at all levels are in extremely short supply. Trying to recruit Psychiatrists is more difficult than any other medical profession I can think of , at least at this time. Neurosurgeons we can get, MDPSY , not so much. Doctorate level Psychologists can pretty much write their own ticket too. This is a big win.

How many Dr degrees does a university need to offer or produce in order to be have the classification changed from Masters University?

Very cool. One of my old roommates is currently in a Doctoral Psychology program in Kansas. He's been in Lawrence for two years...and I think he's got another 5 left

Re: New PhD program
I agree that it's a win, but it was about time for a win in this game against the UNC-BOG and NC General Assembly. It's been only 37 years since our first doctoral program was awarded. Now we're about to be all the way up to two. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.Stonewall wrote: ↑Thu Apr 12, 2018 6:27 pmBehavioral health specialists at all levels are in extremely short supply. By comparison, UNC-G has 26 and UNCC has 22.

Re: New PhD program
I hate to mention it, but we made no case for our fiscal responsibility getting conned into a 2 million dollar wire fraud. That's a lousy black eye on what I assume is the model for for fiscal responsibility in the UNC system. I am not calling for it, but I am curious if anyone lost their job over it. Sometimes a promise you will more careful next time just doesn't get it.

Re: New PhD program
It was a terrible, unintentional fiscal mistake by an individual. But it pales in comparison to 20 years of intentional academic fraud by a large number of students, professors, coaches, and administrators. Doubt that cost them anything but maybe one particular undergrad program.CVAPP wrote: ↑Fri Apr 13, 2018 3:44 pmI hate to mention it, but we made no case for our fiscal responsibility getting conned into a 2 million dollar wire fraud. Re: New PhD program
I'm curious as to the rationale offered for funding Appalachian at the level it is relative to other UNC schools, can someone enlighten me?

Re: New PhD program
Getting most of it back does not excuse it in any way. Resources were used to recover those funds.McLeansvilleAppFan wrote: ↑Fri Apr 13, 2018 7:42 pmAnd we got most of it back.MAD Doctor wrote: ↑Fri Apr 13, 2018 5:37 pmIt was a terrible, unintentional fiscal mistake by an individual. Re: New PhD program
Very true about the resources used in recovering the funds but even taking that into account we are not out all the money. Private industry gets hit with these things as well and we learned and moved on and made corrective measures. I wish it would not have happened but it is also something I am not going to simmer over when everything is put in perspective.

Re: New PhD program
This was/is a serious matter and it has been addressed in both internal and external university audits, by the Controller, by the VC for Business Affairs, by Chancellor Everts and by the BOT.CVAPP wrote: ↑Fri Apr 13, 2018 3:44 pmI hate to mention it, but we made no case for our fiscal responsibility getting conned into a 2 million dollar wire fraud. It does not, in any way, have relevance to the fact that Appalachian has been awarded just two* doctoral programs since being awarded university status in 1971. [...that's two* assuming the Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D) program in psychotherapy/clinical psychology comes through to join the Doctor of Education (Ed.D) program that was awarded in the early 80s.] As noted in a previous post, the ongoing snub is simply due to UNC System/BOG campus politics.

Re: New PhD program
This seems a bit vague; we're not the only school in the system without a law program. To be clear, I'm not asking for opinions, I'm asking for the rationale the BOG offers for funding us at the current, low levels.
