University Housing is moving forward with a new housing project that will change the landscape of West Side and Stadium Lot, vastly impacting App State football and tailgating. In the new plan, Stadium lot will cease to exist as we know it, with much of the parking moving into a massive on-site parking deck, with additional parking spaces being added to the current sites of Bowie/Eggers and Gardner/Coltrane. A large number of residence halls will be replaced in this plan, too, including Gardner, Coltrane, Eggers, Bowie, and Justice. If this progresses on the timeline that University Housing hopes it does, scheduled completion is sometime between 2020 and 2022.

I don’t know where the new housing should be built until Eggars, Bowie, Gardner, Coultrane and Justice can be demolished but this DOES NOT come close to the new 10 year plan that was adopted.

I guess with no state money and you rely on for profit developers you loose some control.

I think parking decks should be on outside perimeters of campus, not where one has to drive through everything to get to them.

When I saw the image I was floored. Three dorms I lived in will be gone.

All the 1970s housing needs to be torn down and reconfigured. If I'm an 18 year old and visiting other schools, dorm life at App is a clear con in comparison.

Absolutely stupid and I have written to both my state senator, congressman and the govonors office to voice my opinion. P3s will be the end of public higher ed imo and do nothing but finance projects on the backs of students...... ehm...... I mean parents and student loans (which have an atrocious payment delinquency rate)

More debt for the school, more cost to students, and less and less investment by the year it seems the state is willing to invest in the UNC system.

I don't mind the look and placement but why are we only adding 400 new beds. Housing has always been an issue and the university is growing as they want it to. Why not add an extra 1000-2000 beds. I think this could be done by just adding 2 more levels to each building. Not sure there are any more hotels to buy to turn into housing.

My assumption would be that they construct the residence halls in Duck Pond first, and then tear down either Gardner/Coltrane or Bowie/Eggers to begin construction on parking spaces before they start tearing into Stadium Lot itself. They could begin building the Winkler Parking Deck tomorrow if they wanted to, as there is nothing there now outside of a volleyball net.

I think that all of those dorms need to be replaced....

1- parking decks need to be located adjoining Rivers Street or have direct ingress and egress onto rivers street. In the concept drawing cars have to pass through all of the pedestrian traffic areas. That is nuts.

2- parking decks need to be hidden behind a face of a building from the street view.

3- The stadium lot should become a giant green space with and enforced base that will support cars parking there for games and then support campus activities and pickup games when not in use. This was a recommendation in the 2025 Master Plan that was adopted only a year ago.

Yes, build new dorms. But please build them behind the existing dorms as best possible and keep that middle area as open as possible and as free from vehicle traffic as possible.

Going P3 means we lose a say in what's really going on and the students (and their parents) are the ones going to pay for it.

The center section needs to be more open and expand the dorm area to allow it to feel open. I just don't understand why put out a 2025 plan less than a year ago and do nothing similar to what the plan was. All because it's now P3 and only gaining a couple hundred beds when we need way more.

This looks great, these kinds of development projects will improve our reputation as a school and help us attract more high quality students. Every alum should be happy with what our school is doing.

Gardner and Coltrane are horrible and should have been torn down long ago.

I know that our main concern is tailgating and how this will impact football season, but if we take off our football-tinted sunglasses, I think we'll all recognize that this is great for the future of our university. One thing that we struggle with at times is recruiting students when our facilities are quickly falling behind in the race that is higher education. By updating all of West Campus, we will hopefully see our chances of recruiting students only increase.

While football season and tailgating will look different, we have to remember that change is inevitable and that the institution has to do what's right for the students, not just for football season. Football is a major money maker and recruitment tool for the university, so I'm just happy that students will still be right at KBS in a few years when this is all done rather than trying to move them elsewhere around the town, possibly hurting our attendance numbers. The students should be at the heart of everything App State does, so if this move is one that will help them and make them want to be at App, I'm all for it.

Two thoughts

This plan is conceptual.

If we want our university to grow it will need to be via P3. Nothing happens if we wait around for state funding.

Enjoy these last few seasons in what is currently tailgating in stadium lot for those that do. Parking lots and areas have been moved away from the line of sight in exchange for a boxed in green space/quad. Looking forward to the major snows and lack of sunlight that green space will receive in the winter.
