The 2nd Annual Summer Diversity Inclusion Infusion Institute will take place this month, with a full class of 60 faculty and staff participants. The workshop provides tools for introducing inclusionary practices and relationships that support a state of being valued, respected and supported.
While these 60 members of our community are attending the immersive Summer Institute, I encourage each of us to consider how we can share in this collective responsibility. This particular workshop is part of our commitment to foster a socially just and equitable culture. It is incumbent upon us all to find ways to make our community one that offers every member the same opportunity to thrive.
In August, we will welcome Dr. Damon A. Williams to our Appalachian Community to facilitate conversations about diversity, equity, inclusion and change. Dr. Williams is one of the nation’s recognized experts in strategic diversity leadership, youth development, corporate responsibility and organizational change. He will be on campus Aug. 27-29, meeting with senior university leadership, Student Affairs, Admissions and student retention professionals, Alumni Affairs, research staff, Equity, Diversity and Compliance staff, Sustainability staff, International Education and Development staff, Diversity Champions and student leaders, among others.
Please mark your calendars now to attend his public address to our campus Aug. 27, which promises to be an engaging conversation about diversity, equity, inclusion and change.

Woops. Not a position, just a "seminar." We need both in order to keep up with the times.

Re: Chancellor Everts Reports on new Diversity PositionF
Appalachian has had a full-time CDO (chief diversity officer) for *more than* 20 years. The current officer, Dr. Willie Fleming, is an appointee of our very own Chancellor Everts. It appears that "diversity" will be the meme or catchphrase at App for 2018-19 and almost certainly the theme for the Fall Student Convo.

I've met Dr. Fleming. Really bright and App is better for having him.
