Since the current NC Legislative Branch refuses to invest in public education, it appears that letting private business in as stakeholder owners of the university is the only option for growth.

Another way to look at public / private endeavors is to see them as freeing up scarce state funds for other uses including things like expansion of Medicaid and educational funding. It's a relatively easy way to get private entities to fund state projects without having to raise tax rates. These also allow the universities to retain a portion of the revenue generated from the operations of completed projects.

Yes, Daphne I agree. If only the NC Legislative Branch would actually DO those things.

I believe and economists support that NC can support all of the needed investment if we choose to do so.

In the end, the federal government (and your taxable income) funds tuition with an unholy delinquency rate on the loans those tax dollars provide. The bubble will burst, and we won't even own the buildings as a university..............................

Or..........

It'll all be fine.

Kinda. It puts the schools on the hook for the funding and not the state at the end of the day. It also removes the accountability to the state residents that a pubic university should have

I don’t have an answer about UNC, but NC State’s Centennial Campus has P3 designation. If I recall correctly, it was the 1st of its kind in North Carolina and has been a big success for them. Everytime I cut through there new buildings are going up.

Sanford is gonna be gutted and replaced starting next summer Since it wasn't P3 and ASU couldn't get the funds from state government, they had to indebt themselves and do a new student service fee to get it approved.

Not getting Sanford funded by the state was a shock to ASU leadership and perhaps pushed them to seek more P3 space.
