New Appalachian State welcome sign
The new Appalachian State welcome sign is set to be unveiled tomorrow, but the workers took the tarp off of it prematurely this evening, allowing me the chance to snag a few shots before its official reveal tomorrow. On first glance, I don't love it as much as I love the previous sign. I always thought that the mix between black and gold wood with the stone sides was an amazing look and felt like Appalachian. This new sign feels much cleaner and modern, yes, but it also feels like it has lost a lot of character and charm that the old sign brought. It's a little too much stone, but that's just one man's opinion!
One cool thing about the new sign is that it brought with it a new pavillion on the Durham Park side and the sign is now double sided. I do like this part, especially with the Founder's Statue having been moved into this pavillion area, too. They are currently planting lots of flowers and bushes around this patio area right now for tomorrow's ceremony.
Also, as a side note, the actual "Appalachian State University" part is a good bit smaller than the previous iteration. The sign previously stretched all the way between the two pillars, but only takes up a fraction of that middle space now. While the new logo is carved into the stone/granite, it is still a very different look than what we are all likely used to.

Great pictures and thanks for uploading! I actually really like this one. Like you I still like the old sign a little more but I don't see anything wrong with the new one either. The fact that it's double sided is really cool.

Re: New Appalachian State welcome sign
Would be nice to see a rock wall at the inner field level all around some day.....hence The Rock. Still could have the current black and gold signage at places to compliment the rock....which I happen to like. Would be nice if some day have a patio plaza be built at top of hill and jumbotron base and the grass hill moved in to enclose with a boulder monument like the entrance placed on the hill.

I guess the NCAA took our three FCS National Championships away. Pardon the sarcasm.

It was time to change. I do wish it were bigger. But it's quite nice. Lets add this work to KBS and the rest of campus!
