Former AD in New Role
Laney is the first Director of the Boone Regional Sports Comission. I’m not kidding. Next thing Cobb will be our Mayor....

LOL. Those who became App fans since the FCS national titles will never know how toxic he was to App State. I still believe we would have been in I-A much earlier if not for him. As long as he stays away from Gillin and the athletics department and he does not have a way to negatively effect us I don't care. Just don't ever want to see him around our program again.

Amen brother. My board name was Roachout. Now is Roachgone. If he and Bork were still here we would still be in the smallcon and listening to all the many reasons we could never complete with fbs teams. As long as he has nothing to do with App I don’t care what he does.

Looking back now, it's simply unreal to recall the number of times that individuals and groups would approach Laney with a workable plan to change things that were being done like it was still 1955 or to make minor improvements to facilities or to actually develop, seek approval and publish a short-term plan and a long-range plan for athletics.roachgone wrote: ↑Thu Jan 17, 2019 11:15 amAmen brother. Mr. Status Quo or Mr. Resistance would always respond with his worn-out catch phrase..."Appalachian can't do that."
I suspect his head is still spinning at everything that's been accomplished since he was ushered into a different line of work and all that's about to unfold over the next 36 months.

Nah, he's probably convinced himself that he's the one who laid the foundation for all the changes for the better in our athletic department since he was shown the door.

Re: Former AD in New Role
I know he was not a well-liked AD among many or most around this board but it appears that David Jackson had something to do with him getting this new job, and that's an indication DJ must have some measure of respect for him. I wish them success.

DJ's decision making process is taking a hit right now if that's true..........

Working in a part-time position, Laney will head the Boone Area Sports Commission, a nonprofit that is currently being established. Tilley previously said the salary would be in the $30,000 range. The office will be housed in the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce and Laney will report to Tilley and Jackson.

Maybe Chancellor Toot can head a regional arts council.

Re: Former AD in New Role
If I could like this post 1,000,000 times I would. Roachel was a roach in our athletics department. I will refrain from telling my personal story but him saying Appalachian can't do that or telling individuals they could not do something was the story of his reign of tyranny. I was told that he said on multiple occasions that he never wanted the Yosef Club to bring in more than 1M in a year because it would take away from his power.asu66 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 17, 2019 12:12 pmLooking back now, it's simply unreal to recall the number of times that individuals and groups would approach Laney with a workable plan to change things that were being done like it was still 1955 or to make minor improvements to facilities or to actually develop, seek approval and publish a short-term plan and a long-range plan for athletics.roachgone wrote: ↑Thu Jan 17, 2019 11:15 amAmen brother. When he said "Appalachian could not do it" he should have said "I, Roachel Laney, am too incompetent to do it".

Re: Former AD in New Role
The problem with an AD is that if he stays on the same job for 5 or 6 years he begins to think of himself as an Emperor or a King instead of the CEO of an athletic department. It happened with Laney and it happened with Cobb. I wouldn't be surprised if it happens with Gillin too. Power can corrupt.
The worst case I ever saw was Jim Weaver at Virginia Tech. The guy caught Parkinson's Disease and was only able to come into his office once or twice a week yet he still refused to step down as AD because he didn't want to give up his power. It wasn't until he was sent to hospice care that he finally stepped aside and a new AD was brought in.
