Mountaineer Athletics to partner with noted sports psychologist
This is a biggie announcement for our student-athletes, folks. Another tip of my hat goes to DG and his staff for this strong decision. A five-star service for a five-star athletic department...

I remember the San Diego Chargers hiring a psychologist to try and improve the performance of their team back in the 70's. They finished something like 3-11. But, hey, the psychologist wrote a best-selling book about the experience.

I am guessing she lives in Charlotte given all her team clients are in that area.NewApp wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2019 8:57 pmDr. Festa is a sports and performance psychologist who specializes in working with professional, international, collegiate and elite amateur athletes. This is an excellent move. I remember reading that Tom Brady was struggling during his first two years as a college QB at Michigan and was struggling to crack the starting line up. He credits a sports psychologist with helping him deal with some issues. We all know how that story went from there.

I'm sure that different programs deal with different issues. She has a wide range of clients which is good. Her experience with the Charlotte 49ers should give her lots of experience dealing with sad athletes and depression.McLeansvilleAppFan wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2019 11:01 pmI am guessing she lives in Charlotte given all her team clients are in that area.NewApp wrote: ↑Thu Mar 07, 2019 8:57 pmDr. Festa is a sports and performance psychologist who specializes in working with professional, international, collegiate and elite amateur athletes. Re: Mountaineer Athletics to partner with noted sports psychologist
Unfortunately, i read this as just kind of a check the box partnership. It doesn't really seem like she has the time/commitment to be up here as she seems stretched pretty thin. Not to mention some of her clients can probably foot a bigger bill than we can.
It would be nice to have someone more readily available. I could be wrong though. Perhaps she will be made available as needed.
Either way a step in the right direction.

I would imagine a doctor like this could maintain a pretty extensive client list in terms of institutions. It's not like every member of those programs is going through therapy. She represents a resource that could be very important to those who need it. I think it's an excellent move.

She will probably work with the coaches. BUT the first time one of our coaches says”how does that make you feel”? I go off the grid.

OK now, all you doubters climb aboard my ol' "way-back machine" and we'll fly back to the spring and fall of '76 and sit in on some of the sessions that Bobby C. and a counseling friend from USC (working pro-bono as a weekend volunteer) conducted for App's Press Maravich holdovers and our Bronx-to-Boone newbies. Those sessions were difference makers.

Re: Mountaineer Athletics to partner with noted sports psychologist
I guess this is a good opportunity to say thank you to the American taxpayers that afford me the opportunity to attend mandated VA and Tricare appointments for psychological therapies. I know the silly exaggerated stressors of 4 combat tours don't compare to the stressors athletes deal with, but I am still appreciative of the work of some of my angels. Dixie Hueton is the one that most strongly comes to mind. She saved my life and the lives of many people who cut me off in traffic. Thanks for paying your taxes, I'm dewing rly gr8 these days.
