Long Time Local Referee David Shervington Passes

Unread post by appgrouch » Mon May 06, 2019 12:06 pm

David Jackson, the former voice of Appalachian State sports broadcast and now current President/CEO of the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce, shares with WataugaOnline.com:

There was no one that enjoyed being part of the ASN family more than Sherv. He'd stick around after every App State basketball game just to chat with us while we packed up. He'd drive straight to Mountaineer Talk from any game he officiated just to make sure we knew he was listening. He came to away games, conference tournaments, ran balls and strikes at baseball games, and he worked on the chain crew at The Rock.

One of the unsung heroes of the understaffed days of App State Athletics
That's what I do. I gripe and I know things.

He was a consistent helper where help was needed - hard to find someone with that track record of officiating at the multiple levels of sports and across the sports board. Officials can be hard to like because you are always wanting your team to win - but at the smallest level of sports he would try and help the kids out, from standing in the correct spot to helping them understand the call and the rules. Hopefully he gets a golden whistle in heaven.
