Memorial Day

I just lowered my holiday flag to half mast at 8 am to honor the fallen servicemen. By their sacrifice, we enjoy what they have given. Freedom, live it in as many ways as possible, because they earned it for us.

I look in the mirror and looking back is now a face in my mid fifties. In pictures from the service you're always 25. Donnie, I still miss you, and love you. Thank you! :(

It’s because of men like this who laid the foundation for our current soldiers and leaders.

Just finished reading "The Lost Soldier". A WWII soldier who was separated from his unit and lost his life in the first battle he was in. I knew the family growing up but never heard the whole story. I salute his memory and sacrifice.

Many confuse today as “ another Veterans Day”. It is not , there is nothing “ happy “ about it. It is a solemn day to remember sacrifice ,” the last full measure of their devotion -that we here do resolve , that these dead have not died in vain “.

I really wish there was a day of remembrance for those that returned home only to kill themselves one way or the other. This is always a terrible day for me. Nothing happy about it, indeed.

My wife's 97 year old grandfather passed away earlier this week.. He spent his early 20s piloting Marine landing craft in places like Okinawa. Until the day he died, he would say he was no hero, the heroes were the boys jumping out of his boats that never got to have the life he lived.

My kids adored him and great granddad was a hero in their eyes.

Thanks to all that served.

I went in at 5:30 AM this morning to lower the town flags to half staff. Very honored and with gratitude I remember those that never made it home. Thinking of them on this Memorial Day.

I was watching a show with vets talking about their "alive date" and how they respond to "thank you for your service" comments. After seeing that docu im saying" I appreciate your sacrifice"

I watched I think that same show last night on ETV. Many combat vets describing boot camp, deployment, wounds, coming home, staying, and responding to that well-intended comment.

I'm not sure if it was live or repeated but there was prior to that a Memorial Day concert from D.C. There were stories about combat vets, in their words, related by some actors. Sam Elliott told this one. It was very moving. Enjoy.

My dad made it home after three years in the Pacific. It was never really spoken of until near the end of his life .It was kind of a confessional , he killed people , more than a few ,and that haunted him.Despite my assurances I really believe he was concerned about meeting them again , on the other side of death.
