I've put it off long enough

Unread post by AppOrange » Wed Jul 17, 2019 4:59 pm

Some, and I stress SOME, of you are much smarter than me and have already figured this out, so I'm hoping you can help. Looking for the best combo (technology wise) to pull the plug on cable but still have access to what I need to watch ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3 and of course ESPN plus. Currently I have Spectrum cable and Internet as well as ROKU's on every TV and HULU. I also pay for ESPN + by the month.

What are you all using to watch away App Football games sans a cable subscription? If it helps, I am in the Raleigh Area. Getting rid of the cable subscription has always concerned me b/c it seems to limit my ability to get App stuff.

Any help would be very appreciated.

I live in Florida so I can’t speak to what it’s like in Raleigh, but I cut the cord a couple of years ago and went with the Amazon Fire Stick. I have Direct TVNow for TV. I subscribed to the ESPN+ app and had very little issue with watching App games.

Do you get ESPN-U with that?

Depending on who your internet provider is, you may have trouble this year. Back around March, AT&T announced that DirecTVNOW no longer supports ESPN3. Supposedly, it was attached in “error”... this despite the ESPN3 site listing DTVNOW as a provider & AT&T advertising it as well. Bunch of bunk, if you ask me. Nonetheless, I still have DTVNOW and am searching for an economical replacement to access ESPN3 & I refuse to go all in with spectrum (despite name change, still crappy ‘ol time warner).

I hate it, because other than no ESPN3, I have been rather happy with DTVNOW.

I've been off cable since 2012 and haven't regretted it at all. Obviously we all still have to pay charter/spectrum here in NC. I've looked in to the various streaming services since they've been rolling out with Sling tv, Various satellite companies giving their shot, etc...The only one I've truly considered paying for is Youtube TV. Hulu looks interesting but Netflix and Hulu are floating in debt and who knows how much longer they will last and be able to provide top, expensive, content. Hulu might be able to last with its parent company. I don't like dealing with dish companies in any capacity. Youtube has a stupid amount of money backing it so I have no doubt it has the highest longevity chance. I also like its flexibility.

What's included for $49.99/month
Live sports, news, and shows from 70+ channels.
Free unlimited DVR storage space.
6 accounts for your household.
3 simultaneous streams.

Here is the link to check your zip and see whats offered.

In the mean time I use netflix and amazon prime. I watch for deals through amazon to get things like $3 a month for a few months on CBS all access and things like that. I've gotten by so far.

Thank you for the answers this helps. If I can ask one more question, What do you have to do to access ESPN3 and ESPN +. Is that a separate charge for the ESPN premium app? And if so, in the past, you have had to have a TV subscription to get access to the content, is that the case?

ESPN+ is a paid monthly subscription directly to ESPN.

ESPN3 is original streaming content not broadcast through any other ESPN channel/platform. To access ESPN3 either your TV provider or ISP has to have it included as part of the service they offer. Oftentimes you don’t know you are paying for it as it is baked into your monthly fee. As examples, AT&T internet (uverse without TV) provides access to ESPN3, whereas spectrum internet alone doesn’t. For spectrum subscribers to access, one also has to purchase a cable subscription.

Both can be streamed through the WatchESPN App.

ESPN3 has a list of providers here:

Hulu live is by far the best streaming service. We've had them all - sling, YouTube, spectrum streaming, PlayStation vue.. Hulu surpasses them all in quality of video, channel selection, and user friendly interface.

I will second this, however, if you are a AMC watcher, you might be in trouble. That is the only shortfall for me in regards to HULU Live TV.

Spectrum, maybe Surry Telephone, or Centurylink. We have Surry at our office on 268 (old EVA building).

I thought I posted a response yesterday but I'm not seeing it here. I have Hulu and ESPN+ (of course). I've had Sling previously and it is fine also, but I agree that Hulu is better, especially in user interface.

The only note about Hulu is that they also provide fewer concurrent sessions (2) than Sling or YouTubeTV. That's generally fine for me, but they also monitor the login location and only allow 4 changes of address per year. That means you can't take your Roku or Firestick with you traveling and use Hulu because streaming devices aren't treated as mobile devices. You can travel and use your phone, tablet or laptop to stream Hulu. It's not a huge deal, but I actually found it annoying because I have traveled with my firestick in the past.
