He got me out of a ticket in 1997. I know he did the same for a bunch of App folks.

This is sad, sad news. Tom grew up on a big working farm down east and knew what it was like to do a day's WORK. He graduated from App and worked as a probation officer for several years. After getting his JD, he established a wildly successful law practice in The High Country. The man had a heart as big as the mountains that he dearly loved. The High Country and the entire Appalachian Family have lost a great friend. Young people by the hundreds whose lives he touched have lost a tremendous advocate. Tom was active in a lot of human service organizations and causes. He also served an eight-year term as a member of the NC State Board of Education.

My wife used to babysit Tom's son Davis when she and I were students at App. I'm really sorry to hear about Tom's passing, sure it's a tough time for Davis. Thoughts and prayers to the family.
