Everts mentioned eliminating men's sports, tennis and indoor track and field. Does that mean there has been a change of heart and soccer is not being eliminated?

That part is not in quotes, so likely it is an error of omission from the writer.

Sadly, despite efforts by many to save the men's soccer program; the decision will stand. Coach O'Keefe and the staff have worked tirelessly and w/o compensation from the university to find our players a collegiate soccer home for the 2020 season and help them transition away. ASU WILL NOT HAVE A MEN’S SOCCER TEAM IN 2020.

I'll have a lot more to say at some point when my emotions aren't boiling and when I have everything completely documented. I've honestly never seen anything quite like this.

Here's more detail, Chris. It's an ugly wound to App State Athletics!

The decision to cut men's soccer is particularly puzzling in light of professional soccer coming to the Carolinas. I'm personally not a big soccer fan, but we're about to see a significant change in the culture and commitment we see in this state for soccer. Youth programs of all ages will see accelerated growth and look to affiliate with the new team. Soccer's rise in popularity along with improving infrastructure will make it a bigger draw in NC and this will make the schools that have programs more attractive to both athletes and non-athlete students. The absence of soccer will hurt the university's ability to compete, not overnight, but in the long run.

I’m a huge soccer fan. We will get it back k but it may be a few years. The fact that soccer is not a Sunbelt sport I’m sure had a lot to do with it. I’m sure wrestling and baseball were in the mix

More from Ethan Joyce and the WSJ on App State's athletic budget decisions and the overall toll on the entire university the cuts may cause...

Has there been any announcement of the furloughs on the official athletics website?

Mens Soccer is never coming back. This administration has been looking to drop mens soccer for years. In the current climate it will never return. As college sports and all colleges, in general, change their model to match the new reality there are going to be a lot more male sport cuts than anything else. This sport will not return because revenues arent going to be back to the pre covid era for years.

Maybe those in charge of things are on furlough.
