1992 NLCS - Goalposts

Unread post by AppSt8Will » Mon Oct 19, 2020 2:52 pm

I pose this question from time to time to see who remembers. Since the World Series is about to start, I think it's appropriate timing. Who remembers way back in 1992 when the Braves beat the Pirates to advance to the World Series (the Sid Bream score from 2B play), that during the aftermath of that victory celebration, the App students poured out of the dorms, broke down the fence to the stadium, and tore the goalpost down? I always find myself thinking, how could that possibly have happened? But it did. Who remembers?

I never knew about the goal posts coming down, but I was watching the game in a cheap Motel in Asheville, had the door open as relatives were filtering in for a family thing up there, and when Slow Sid made it home all the way from second base it felt like the entire Motel erupted...

I had 1 roommate that was a Pirates fan. He may have broken a few things that night.

Ha, never heard that story. That was before my time at App, but definitely one of my favorite sports memories watching from my living room.

I'm not much of a Braves fan anymore, but watching them choke away that 3-1 lead reminded me of the good ol' days.

I’ve heard this story several times from Appst89. A true Mountainee will use any excuse to tear down a goal post...

“When Sid Slid” I still remember that vividly. He may be the slowest base runner of all time but he beat Bonds throw. A while back, MLB Network did a special with Bob Costas interviewing several key players from that World Series and Andy Van Slyke in CF tried to tell Bonds to cheat in a step or two because he knew Bonds didn’t have the strongest arm before that hit. Bonds told Van Slyke to “shut the F... up” basically and the rest is history. I love hearing those kind of stories.

We were working in the intramural office upstairs in Broome-Kirk Gym when they won. Not only did they tear down the goal posts. They also carried them to Rivers Street and "hijacked" a slow moving semi (or maybe it was a motorhome). The goal posts and the students rode atop the vehicle down Rivers Street at a reduced pace.

It used to be my favorite "AppState stump um trivia question". When was the last time AppState's goal posts were torn down???? When the Braves won the NCLS.

I was at a breakfast place (Don't remember the name) that served $3 pitchers having a great time and here come the goal posts and a mob. It was one of many great nights in Boone.

Back in 2008, students broke into the stadium and tore down the goalposts when it was announced that Obama won the presidency. They threw one into Duck Pond and the other was marched up to the Chancellor’s house, where Peacock gave a speech.

I’ll always remember the ‘92 World Series because I’m a born and bred Jays fan. Ed Sprague hitting that pinch hit bomb and Dave Winfield ripping the double down the line in extra innings are baked into my brain. Sorry Braves fans.

Hell of a Braves squad though. Mark Lemke could hit anything.

Unrelated but a goalpost story I remember. My freshman year in ‘82 we beat (I think) Marshall in what was considered a huge win. The students tore down one goal post. The next day the club team had a game and had to do all of the kicks on one end. Hope I remember that right.

That's awesome. I didn't follow the goalposts, so glad to hear the extended version of the story!

I was sitting in my dorm room on the first floor of Gardner hall when I saw the goalpost coming out of the stadium.

I was sitting on the porch of a house on king street drinking a beer with friends as I watch the crowd carry the goalposts down the street. It was crazy how many "fans" were in the group. Most were clearly just caught up in the hysteria. It was a mob like I have never seen on King Street.

Funny you mention that. I lived in Hoey Dorm. You could hear ppl yelling and it picked up steamed. Tons of ppl out. Best part is, it made no sense. I get there were probably a bunch of Brave fans there, but think students just wanted something fun to do

I was also a freshman in '82 and there was an awesome panty raid that swept across the campus. The only one I remember in my 4 years. Anyone remember that? Panties were flying out of the dorm windows.

Got lucky and had a phone # on the floating unmentionable. I have to say I am proudest
of swimming to the center of the Duck Pond before a multi shower steam in Bowie.
