All these dams need to be taken out even if the remediation is not done as if happening here. Either that or hook up a small generator and get some energy out of it for a few homes.
The way it is now we are doing a lot of harm to the waterways and getting no benefit.

I wrote a story when the funding for this was approved and taking a good picture of the dam was a slightly-terrifying experience. It was dangerous to be around, especially after a good rain.
This should also help the stabilization of the stream bank, which is an ongoing project along the whole Middle Fork New River. The Middle Fork Greenway, when completed (from Blowing Rock to Boone's Greenway), is going to make that area very attractive for fly fishing and recreation ala the Virginia Creeper Trail.
