Use to get a pot of coffee and biscuits and gravy for a couple bucks on my way to class.
Today The Gamekeeper and Bistro Roca move the needle.

All I needed was for Joe to "Stoke my engine" and life was just fine.

Always loved Woodlands (the Pig Out). Used to go there a good bit 82-86. Was heartbroken when I heard it burned down and was thrilled when it was built back virtually the same. My wife didn’t go to App but she loves the place as well and we hit it when we travel up the mountain. Makotos was a favorite back in the college days mainly because we ate lunch (huge plates) for about $3.50. For poor college guys it was awesome. When the guys went we fought to get the seat on the end because the leftover rice usually hit that plate. Lived in Hoey for two years and never ate at DBI. Too much $! Gold Room was a treat if there was extra money on the meal card.

Back in the day, Pepper's and Tijauna Fats in Blowing Rock and Stonewall's when we worked at Elk River the summer after we graduated (if we saw a member out for dinner, our meals were often comped).
Currently, my family loves Coyote Kitchen, Our Daily Bread and Carolina Pizza Co. has the best crust in the High Country. If we out towards Newland, Carolina BBQ/Pickin' Pig Parlor is great. For finer dining, you can never go wrong with The Peddler.

Then—Yogi’s, Speedys Pizza, Gold Room Salad Bar (buying meal books from the girls in Hoey dorm), BI, original Peppers, Mtn House, Sollicitos
Special Occasions/after football games then—“Con Ed Center” (before it was named Broyhill), Smoketree Lodge, and yes Danl Boone Inn.
These days—still Peppers, Game Keeper, Joy Bistro

Then: "Good Eats" in Foscoe. Best food of any style I have ever had. They were a hotdog stand (boar's head, of course) when I moved into a tiny house in Mill Ridge as a sophomore in 2002. They quickly got barebone digs for a homestyle italian takeout joint in Foscoe location one, then gained seating in Foscoe location 2 (eat crow area), then moved to Valle Crucis in the place that burned down (I think they had changed their name to whatever "good eats" is in Italian) and the last I ever saw of them they'd moved to Boone Mall. If anyone knows where that family ended up, I'd love to know.
Now: Cardinal, COBO, Bella's lunch specials - especially on Thursday with draft specials, Bistro Roca and Gideon Ridge, Artisanal, Gamekeeper, Taco King (can't think of the new name, but renamed and changed to a red truck from the trailer they had previously parked at Farmers Rental and now located beside Idol's Tire across from new market center).

When I went we got the appetizer with all the different meats but my main dish was the elk steak and it was delicious.GastonApp09 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 1:39 pmWhat's your go-to there? People have always told me to go, but I have never made it. Might have to try that next visit!

The cheeseburger at the original Boone Drug lunch counter was highly underrated.

The Emu is like tenderloin and the Boar is excellent also. I've eaten the elk and antelope...Had rabbit and rattlesnake sausage there once.CheckYosef94 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 03, 2021 3:41 amWhen I went we got the appetizer with all the different meats but my main dish was the elk steak and it was delicious.GastonApp09 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 1:39 pmWhat's your go-to there? Re: Favorite High Country Restaurant
Back then it was easily Yogi's and Woodlands. (80-85)
Now having lived here for over 20 years I can't say that I really have a favorite. Just depends on the mood.

We went to Booneshine brewery for the first time on a trip earlier in January. We were pleasantly surprised at the food (more small plates/Apps) but it was really really good. Of course the Beer ain’t too shabby either!

Booneshine is by far the best all around brewery in Boone right now. They have expanded their menu a little due to COVID with the BBQ options outside. Need to get that on menu full time, IMO. The beer is awesome.
1180 in Boone Mall is really good. Good food and good drink choices/specials.
Foggy rock in Blowing rock is always a good option to

Hard to imagine no mention of Chips Lounge yet. Different special each night Monday - Thursday. Cant remember which night was the roast beef but that place was a staple for our gang.

Downtown Boone Drug, Parson's Choice and steak fries, hands down, mic drop.
WE ARE YOSEF!
Re: Favorite High Country Restaurant
Back in the early 90's it was Sollicetos and Boone Bagelry. Now, Wild Craft Eatery and Coyote Kitchen. My choices for restaurants that were around then and now would be Red Onion, Casa Rustica, and Boone Bagelry.

Ha! I was just telling my kids about those the other day when talking about what I ate when broke in college.
