A sad day for Boone. Nothing like Mr. S singing That's Amore.

Sad. White pie night (Wednesdays) was my favorite night of the week.

Extremely sad day for Boone and App State. I hadn't seen Mr. Sollecito at a game for a good while so I was concerned about his health. Great man and great pizza!

His halftime performance with the Marching Mountaineers during the 1994 Marshall game is still the best halftime show we've ever had.

My wife and I were just talking about his place beside Bodenheimer, we loved the food. We were there one night with our three year old and she started making a mess eating 'sketti. We tried to control things, but Mr. S said "let her have fun, we have to sweep the floor anyway." He had customers for life!

Thank you for posting the obit. What memories. That was my favorite place to eat in Boone...both the food and Mr. Sollecito were special.

Although Mike hadn't been able to get around much for years this is an extreme loss for ASU & Boone. A one of a kind. Back in the 70's there is no place I'd rather be than listening to him walk from table to table fulfilling song requests while eating Aunt Julia's Lasagna. To this day the best pizza I've ever tasted.

My wife would kill right now for a Sollecito white pie. She's tried many others over the years but none as good as his.

Sad day indeed for Boone and ASU. What a great guy. The last time I heard him sing was 3-4 years ago at Joe's Italian in Boone. It was just as good then as it was back the 70's. What a great place to eat, that was run by a gentleman that really supported ASU. I bet Bobby Cremins has shed a tear today.

That's Amore!

This news brings forth tears of sadness but Mr. "S" also has given me many, many happy memories. Appalahian State and Boone have lost a true good-guy.

Mr. S enriched my life at APP and made a lasting impact as much as any professor I ever had. So many great memories. He was so generous to us at WASU also. He sponsored our trip to Roanoke one year to broadcast the basketball tournament the year we beat Furman in the Finals for Bobby Cremmin's (and App's) first trip to the NCAA tournament. On top of covering our trip and hotel expenses, he handed us a nice wad of cash so we could have "a good time."

Whenever I head Dean Martin singing "That's Amore" who I'm really hearing is Mr. Sollecito. He owned that song.

I was first introduced to Mr. Sollecito as a junior high kid by none other than Bobby Cremins at basketball camp. He was one of the first guys that Coach Cremins introduced us to on the first day of camp. Mr. Sollecito welcomed us to Boone and handed out coupons for pizza delivery. I think we had Solle's pizza delivered to Justice Hall at least twice every week I went to basketball camp. They delivered a lot of pizza to Justice during camp.

Tremendous loss of a fine, fine man. Ate at Mike's place many, many times; sat with him at BaskB games in VG and at BaseB games at the old field where Durham Park now sits. Traveled with Mike, Cremins, Cantwell and Nate Ross on the team plane to Bloomington, Indiana for ASU's '79 NCAA tourney appearance against LSU. Was there in a Bloomington bar when Mike serenaded Kevin in a post-game celebration of the birth of his first child--daughter Michela back home at Watauga Med Ctr. Kevin's wife, Cathy, obviously couldn't make the trip. Michela was born while the game was in progress. Special memories of a special guy.

Sad day. Nice to read the stories of how Mike touched everyone's life. Thinking about all the generations of ASU students that he came to know. I'll skip the details but the first time I met him I thought he was insane. I was not in a good mood at all. Left our encounter in a much better mood and had no doubt he was insane/genius.
He could always put a smile on my face and his love for all things ASU was amazing.

Rest in peace Mike,

I worked for Mr S. for the better part of 4 years starting in spring 88. Over-time I think I did every job there was to do at Sollie's delivery, cooking, tending, ID checking/bouncer etc.. Being in the military prior to school and in the reserves while in school, Mr. S and I often shared our military stories and even more after my return from the Persian Gulf war. We had many talks about living in New York, where he was from and I spent some of my teenage years. We had a good bond and he helped me in many ways as a young man and student. For myself He set the example of how to support App, I have tried to live up to it all these years. When I needed Fatherly advice it didn't come from coaches or profs or counselors it came from Mr S. I have been blessed and I am thankful for him being in my life and will always have the fondest memories, and yes like many of you even of him singing his songs.(though I probably heard them more than most) I may differ from the majority but my favorites were always Mack the Knife and a peperoni sausage calzone.

Catch you on the flip side Mr. S. ........GO APP!

hey AshevilleApp this really stinks huh? pm me

Mr. S had the "An A1 University needs I-A football" bumper sticker on his car when I was up there. Have to imagine he's pretty happy today.
