Wow that brings back some memories. My girlfriend at the time (now my wife) used to treat me there when I ran out of meal tickets. You could get a pretty good steak in there and as I recall they even had a piano player to give it a little ambiance. I must confess that I also liked the food at the BI !

Date night with the wife while in grad school. Although not Ruth Chris, it was the only time we had steak while in college.

A definite splurge which happened a little too often so towards the end of the semester I'd end up eating Kraft Mac & Cheese for meals which were filling and super cheap.

Always good eats at the Gold Room. I remember toward the end of every semester when the girls with too much money left on the meal card with sell it for pennies on the dollar. This allowed my friends and I to dine at the Gold Room with regularity at the end of each semester.

Felt like the height of dining sophistication to a 19-year-old who otherwise mostly ate at the food court, Los Arcos and Murphy's.

Not much of a sense of humor though. The lady taking orders didn't appreciate my friend asking for the "small forest animal surprise".

Love the old pics, but does anyone have any pics from the 90's. Also, does anyone know when the Gold Room shut down?

It shut down likely because the university could make more money leasing out the space than they could offering a “premium” option themselves.

I got there just after they renamed it--Blue Ridge Cafe, I think?--in 2000. Most people still called it the Gold Room, even if that's just something we heard from upperclassmen, and you could still get a steak.

If you were class of 83 you may be talking about a guy who lived next to me my sophomore year...black guy named Ulysses.. he played the Gold Room often. Huge Paul McCartney fan, collected imports and non released songs. Nicest guy you could ever meet.

My wife and I met at Legend's. Our first date was at The Gold Room the next evening.
