Heaven has a new angel, artist and Mountaineer fan. It's my unhappy task to let you know of the loss of a fine daughter of Appalachian. Wilkes artist Lynn Underwood (McCabe) passed away peacefully Friday after a long and courageous battle with cancer. A memorial service celebrating Lynn's life was held Sunday afternoon at the North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church.

Lynn was an art major at Appalachian and at one point a full-time volunteer in the Appalachian Athletic Dept. If you were ever in Owens Fieldhouse, some of the hallway and office wall murals you saw there were painted by Lynn. In addition, many of us have signed and numbered prints of Lynn's work hanging on our home and office walls...her #38 jersey print of Hall of Famer Dino Hackett and her 2005 national championship print...to name a few.

Lynn was the daughter of two Appalachian grads...Betty and Bill [Blackie] Underwood. Bill, Lynn's Dad, was a former Mountaineer football player (one of App's famous Duggins' Boys of '47) and a faithful fan and supporter. Lynn is the mother of App grad Ellie McCabe who is now a grad school student at Wake Forest. She's also the mother of current App freshman, Sarah McCabe. Lynn's stepmother, JoAnn Underwood of West Jefferson, is also an Appalachian grad.

Lynn dearly loved her family, God, her church, her country, animals (especially her horses), art and her art students, music, flowers and Appalachian Football. She was blessed with many. many friends and she will be greatly missed. Heaven has a new angel, artist and Mountaineer fan. RIP, Lynn.
