Yeah, This is awesome! I wish this thread had 3-4 pages like that Thread about a professor wanting to be paid as much as a Domino’s employee!

Chem Department? Chem Department?

That is the A.R. Smith Department of Chemistry and Fermentation Sciences to you buddy. :-)

Seriously, is there another department on campus named in memory of someone?

Hopefully he likes it at App and we can retain him once this thing blows up. What a great idea for production of energy. This really could be a world changing type of technology.

Fermentation Science changing the world. This is the type stuff a couple Chem majors come up with after a few brews. Dude.

Well the article says he has received a patent for this amazing discovery, so I wouldn't be surprised if he isn't working anywhere soon.

Having a patent and making money on said patent are two different things.

True, but if this guy doesn't make any money off this find, than it's not nearly as impressive as we all seem to think it is. If it's anywhere close to as big a deal as it sounds to me, the guy should be a billionaire

Maybe he pulls a Salk and lets humanity be better off and doesn't worry about $$ since he has a decent paying job with job security.

Why not both?

If the discovery is in any way useful, someone, probably lots of someones, will make a bunch of money. It might as well be the guys that came up with it.

The truth is, it's probably far less impressive of a discovery than I'm making it out to be or we'd be hearing about it somewhere other than a student newspaper.

Later Edit: yeah, the more I think about it, the more I think it's probably not that big a deal after all. Impressive yes very much so, worthy of praise, but earth shattering, probably not. Making nitrogen by mixing water an ammonia may or may not be all that new an idea, and nitrogen isn't exactly a rare element anyway.

And fueling vehicles with nitrogen isn't exactly a new idea either - at least if my memory of watching 1980s Saturday morning cartoon commercials as a kid is correct. "SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY, ONE NIGHT ONLY AT THE GREENSBORO COLISIUM...COME SEE GRAVEDIGGER! MONSTER TRUCK RALLY, TRACTOR-PULL, AND NITROGEN POWERED FUNNY CARS! KIDS UNDER 10 ARE FREE!"

Also, McLeansvilleAppFan, you would be proud of me. Last weekend, I had to make a one-way trip from Richmond VA to Greenville SC because my brother was giving me his old truck. To get down there and drive the truck back to VA, rather than flying, I took the Amtrak Crescent overnight from Charlottesville to Greenville. It was a wonderful experience. Cheaper and far more comfortable than a plane, and with a 6am arrival in Greenville, I had all day to drive back home.

The Crescent is a beautiful ride in VA IMHO.
