Wow. I wonder who had an issue with the Durham family and had connections with the Dixie Mafia. That's crazy.

I am guessing the part where they mention the victims family were talked with in December is where they may have found out the motive but the police do not feel the need to bring this out to the public.

On a side note I think the Dixie Mafia was mentioned in a recent Righteous Gemstones episode on HBO. I had never heard of the Dixie Mafia until recently.

Did some digging. Most of the murders carried out by Dixie Mafia were hits on people, usually former members, that were going to testify against their illegal operations. It doesn’t look like the Durhams were involved with illegal operations, but in an article published in 2015 about the case, there was rumor that Bryce had discovered a scheme of rolling back mileage on cars and them being sold as newer cars for more than they should have (somewhere in Surry County). Durhams had just bought a dealership in Boone and the reason for the move to Boone. Scheme was likely connected to Dixie Mafia and Bryce and his family were likely killed because he uncovered the scheme.

I never had heard of the Dixie Mafia before I attended App, but while I was there (88-93) I heard lots of rumors about many locals having ties to the Dixie Mafia. The name sounded so ridiculous that I just assumed it was stuff of urban legend but after reading this article perhaps there was some truth to it after all.

amazing they finally solved. There have been rumors the son in law wanted the family dead before they took their daughter out of the will.

I knew Bobby Durham, he was a senior at Watauga when I was a freshman. He was a close friend with the older brother of one of my friends. Anyway, every time I go by their house on 105 extension I think of Bobby Joe.
