I suspect the asking and getting approval is the key versus stealing. And now taking it to the media is probably not going to help tuscola high school's case.

The Detroit Tigers called our high school years ago and said “Better change your D. It’s ours.” So we added a little squiggle on one end and changed the curve a little. This only affected baseball. Football helmets had a block

I am 100% for any owner protecting their Intellectual Property. But this brings up a question:

With the "3 distinct changes" being the official method to differentiate logos, will most people be able to tell the difference?

Maybe ( if we are lucky) Tennessee will protest our band playing “The Tennessee Waltz” and the EMC playing clips of UT football crowds in their commercials.

I do not think that anyone plays our fight song. Like some one I know once said about Hi Hi Yikas, "It ain't pretty, but its ours!"

Mitchell HS uses something pretty darn close as well, just not the same colors.

It is totally different, it faces the right.
Unless you flip it around :)

Here’s another one associated with Mitchell in recent years.

That shade of purple reminds me of those mimeograph machines from back in my elementary school days. I could actually SMELL those pictures.
Actually, Richmond App, those were Spirit Duplicators, not mimeograph machines. Mimeograph machines used ink.

Thanks for the clarification, but I bet you can still smell that “ink” (I can’t think of a better word). I was kind of disappointed when they phased them out in my school. I remember holding the cold paper to my face, and then later holding the warm paper after they installed copiers. It wasn’t the same.

We still used the spirit duplicators at AL Brown in 1992 at my first teaching gig. If had been a few years since I had been around them myself so I have to admit it was fun to use (and smell.) I kept some of the masters and had them until the school fire in 2006.

I understand the part about high school coaches not having the time or funding to create a slick logo for branding their school mascot and logo, but those are reasons to look for resources that are available and for free. Ask your school's art teacher(s) for help. He/she/they may even recommend their best art students to get involved.

I may be old and even old-school in some of my views, but there's something about adults teaching students to cheat or steal that simply can't be justified. "You can't be right by doing wrong; and you can't be wrong by doing right." (spirituallythinking.blogspot.com)
If it happens to the Apps, it happens to me!

Duplicator fluid is the better term instead of ink.
Test scores have been going down ever since they stopped using spirit duplicators.
One whiff from that purple test and the knowledge just poured out of your head. Easy on the eyes too.

Thanks. You may be onto something there. I bet a few of these machines are hanging around in the back of some storage rooms.

I personally like for high schools to emulate our logos, colors, name and traditions.

I do get the whole "intellectual property" thing, but I just find it hard to see any damage being done by local high schools copying our logo. Frankly, it's a pretty atypical logo so choosing to copy it is a pretty high compliment. Now, if a college football program or a business were to copy it, I would feel differently. I do think it's only reasonable that these programs should go through the process of requesting the usage and getting permission but seems like that could be handled amicably if it's the case.

While I agree with your sentiment, to me this is a situation where it is better to ask permission, rather than seek forgiveness. Seeking permission allows for parameters to be set forth. Either way, it seems like it was handled amicably.
