Peacock to sky dive w/Special Ops before game

Unread post by asu66 » Sun Jun 09, 2013 1:47 am

ASU's 2013 Alumni Award Gala was held last night at HCC with an enthusiastic audience of Appalachian folks on hand to honor award recipients. Those recognized included Hughlene Bostian Frank '68 for the Outstanding Service Award; Brandon '06 and Erica '07 '08 Adcock for the Young Alumni Award; Dr. Harry L. Williams '86 '88 '95 and US Army Major General Edward Reeder, Jr. '81 for the Distinguished Alumni Awards. Also recognized were seven 2013 Alumni Memorial Scholars.

One of the highlights of the evening occurred when Major General Reeder, commanding general of U.S. Army Special Forces (SF) Command and the 1st Special Forces Regiment at Ft. Bragg, offered to make it possible for Ken Peacock to make a paratrooper jump from an Army aircraft to deliver the football before the kickoff of the "first night game of the season." This is a paraphrase, but it's very close. He said to KP, we'll take you up to 30,000 feet; strap you to a tough as nails master sergeant; drop you over Hickory and guarantee to give you a soft landing on the 50 yard line at KBS. The crowd went wild.

When KP was recognized for remarks at the end of the program he essentially said...Game On! He said he was accepting the sky dive offer and would look eagerly forward to it. "That's been on my bucket list for a long time," he said. He did ask if they could jump a "little closer to the stadium than Hickory."

This alone will be worth the price of the ticket!

The only home night game on the schedule is the home opener, Sept 7th vs NC A&T.

The Sgt should have a helmet cam on him. That would be am amazing video for the scenery alone.

My first thought: what the hell is Satt thinking allowing Andrew to do this before a game?

Just one more reason to appreciate Chancellor Peacock. Hopefully the university can bring in someone with half as much enthusiasm that KP has for App. It would be icing on the cake of his legacy if the $200m campaign could be completed before he steps down.

And for whatever it is worth - my wife and I attended our first Alumni Gala last night. It was an excellent program! I will never miss another. Unbelievable alumni winners. I had tears in my eyes more than once during the program. With 107,000 alumni, cannot believe only about 200 in attendance, plus the class of 63 had special activities and where recognized. We should have 1000+ attending every year!!!

And yes Peacock agreed to jump at first night game, has to be Sept 6???

Hope they have a back up chancellor waiting in the wings by then.....just kidding.
Lot of people wouldn't do this. He's got guts in addition to everything else.
Heck of a guy.

Now if we could just some dirt moving on stadium expansion.

>"little closer to the stadium than Hickory."

I assume the Hickory reference by the Army officer was a joke, but how close does one jump from the landing site. If one dropped a rope straight down from the airplane how far from KBS would the rope land?

After reading this thread, I realized that jumping from that height is above Mt Everest. The chancellor would have to have oxygen and wear special gear at that height and he would be drifting for a very long time. I suspect Hickory is not far fetched. Normal skydiving height is around 4500 ft.

The 30,000 feet was a joke. Only HALO jumps are that high and that's not for tandem jumps.

And people wonder why ASU alumni and students love this guy so much. That will be awesome to see!
