Yeah, because that's what we need. More rules and harsher punishments. That always works out well.

They should have invited alcohol drinkers to this summit to find some solutions that might actually work.

Some of those suggestions were crazy.

eliminate low cost alcohol specials at restaurants or bars. (Yes I am sure that the local bars are willing to give away their best money night of the week)

make sure landlords have an alcohol clause. ....I am sure that will go over well with landlords in an over built area.

Love where the article was talking about a BAC of over .21 as a big deal. Half of the campus have probably had a BAC of over .21 in the past month.

I was about to comment on some of these recommendations. There are too many issues that will arise when the campus attempts to limit the local businesses such as the restaurants and rental companies. I also do not agree with the mandating of more Friday morning classes. What impact will that have on someone who decides to go out on a Friday night opposed to a Thursday night?

When I was there, which was within the past 6 years, it was obvious that access to alcohol was pretty open. I would think that focusing more on educating the student population and teaching them moderation would be the way to go. Why make it tougher on those who can enjoy alcohol responsibly because of the dumb mistakes of the few who cannot?

My favorites are:

 mandate more Friday morning classes
mandatory attendance policy in all classes

Eliminate drink specials?!

You mean try and dictate what a private and sovereign business does and what they can charge adults?

As asinine as that entire list is, to think that woman actually thinks it's possible is downright scary. What happened to Darwinism? How has she avoided traffic and drinking bottles of bleach ect for so long?

Education and enforcement not more suggestions. There are enough laws on the books to get the job done. A committee of 125 was a waste of time.

If a student doesn't know the pitfalls of alcohol abuse by age 21, then education about it is probably futile. Middle school and high school health classes should be enough. One of the problems is that it is considered uncool not to drink and drinking is a sign of adulthood. Even on here, people brag about how many beers they have drunk at tailgates.
Personally, I never did see the purpose of getting drunk.

That might be part of it, but I think a major contributor to alcohol problems a college context is the forbidden fruit phenomenon. Kids go through high school years completely sheltered and are suddenly given unlimited freedom when they get to college. Couple that with harmones, a "nothing bad can happen to me" mentality and having very few responsibilities and it's no wonder university culture is the way it is.

And this is coming from a guy who enjoys a stiff drink or twelve.

I imagine you meant that as a joke, but I believe it had something to do with it.

What about this all day "pub crawl" being promoted by many of the bars in Boone (and some in Blowing Rock?! Driving?) on opening weekend, Saturday, of school this year?? which happens to be FanFest day which is supposed to be family friendly...is that a good tone to set for the year? I think not.

You're damn right it's a good way to set the tone. Why should one person's poor decisions change a great college town culture? The pub crawl will be from bar to bar, all of which check IDs. If underage drinking is a problem, crack down, but there is no reason to crack down on ADULTS.

Set what tone? Is it to show the parents and families that ASU is a good place for budding alcoholics? I didn't realize that drinking was necessarily a part of a college town's culture. Many parents send their children to ASU to become future teachers, not to be like the drunks at ECU.
I agree with APPRIDE's queries.

I like how somebody on that committee thinks students are abusing alcohol because the library isn't open long enough.

And more friday classes? Yeah... that'll go over well with the professors... being told they have to be on campus early on fridays to babysit...

More BS rhetoric from the Fun Nazis. Throughout the last 50 years and for the next 100 years, college kids have been getting drunk. If private entities (i.e.- bars, restaurants) want to promote a pub crawl, there ain't a dadgum thing the university can do about it. If I could make it up that weekend, you best believe I would be stumblin' and bumblin' up and down King Street with the best of the students. I may pay for it Sunday-Wednesday of the following week though!

Why can't we all just get "along neck"?
