Mount Rushmore- Howard Knob

Unread post by Bigdaddyg1 » Thu Jan 18, 2024 7:29 am

Interesting takes on the best front court of App State basketball. I've seen various opinions on the greatest football players and the Goat is without question but if they carved out 4 for each sport on the Knob who is there? Wasn't exactly sure what the appropriate folder would be for this.

Did you ever see the soccer team play volleyball during a basketball half-time? Using on soccer skills? Amazing.
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

It’s funny how you forget things then someone mentions it and you think “ ohhhh yeah”. Those guys were incredible. A couple were world class athletes. With names hard to spell…

Football would have to be: Armanti, Coach Moore, John Settle, Dexter Coakley.

Mike Ramsey, Ron Hodges, Frank Lovrich or Jim Morris (winning % v longevity) in baseball. In wrestling, Bruce Schlegal, Herb Singerman, and Paul Mance. In volleyball, Traci Blankenship. In WBB, Linda Robinson and Valorie Whiteside.

Coach Bentley getting there at warp speed, App Wrestling continues to be ranked in the top 25 year in and year out.

In wrestling, we have only had 2 guys that were 2x All Americans at the Division 1 level, Mark Fee and Jonathan Millner. Those two would have to be on the short list.

I’ll go the other way with Wall of Shame: Capel, Mack Brown, Withers

If you're going that way, you may as well add Tony Petersen to the list.

For Rushmore, I’d suggest Grady Davis

I would agree but it's hard to leave out Sam Martin, punter, who is climbing the ladder of many records for punters in the history of the NFL.

Time for me to be uber pedantic. The official name is Howard Knob according to the USGS. A fact that very few seem to know.
This is my very generic signature added to each post.

Gerald Adams was a class act. Whether you were a $500 YC donor or somebody like Sofield, Gerald made you feel like the most important person in the room. It's hard to overestimate what Gerald and Julia mean to App State Athletics.

Of course generally speaking any Mt Rushmore- Knob in our case would consist of a select group of 4. I was really interested in takes for football and basketball. Other sports are probably a little tougher and would take someone with an extensive knowledge. Interesting that this branched off into non athletic folks. We could include the HK group of the historically most esteemed App people- not to include Cline unfortunately.
