App alums showing up

Unread post by jjapp2013 » Thu Oct 03, 2024 10:30 pm

A Winston-Salem band called Ears to the Ground and the Forsyth County alumni board raised $20K for Red Cross and the university’s disaster relief fund on Thursday night. Amazing effort from alums trying to help after this terrible storm.

Not a fan of Eric's voice on the first verse, would have preferred he used his traditional bluesy tone you can hear in the chorus. The Mistress Named Music tone would have been warranted.

Some may not like his UNC antics, but he's done a lot for App and the area and from a strictly music perspective he's one of the best country contributors of this generation, probably second to only Stapleton.

Assume Luke would do something, but I don't really follow his socials or anything, so haven't seen anything as or yet.

A group from my church is headed up to Spruce Pine in the morning. Serving lunch to whom ever shows up. Planning for 500. Through NC Emergency Mgt. Leaving Raleigh 5:00 am, do lunch pack up and head back. I was really hoping for Wataga county but as a Mountaineer we go where ever we can help.
Send some prayers we’ll get there safely, feed some hungry folks, provide comfort, show some love, let the light of Christ shine and get back home.
They ask us to take 500 gallons of water so the people can take it with them. Haven’t quite got the 500 yet but in the 300 range.

My company, Piedmont Distillers, Inc., makes Midnight Moon Moonshine and we just launched this today on our social channels:

https://midnightmoonshine.com/nc

If you go to our Facebook page or other social media sites it's easier to share. We're based in North Carolina and Junior Johnson was from Wilkes County. Also, myself and one other here are App grads, so this hits home. We're planning to do more but it's a start. Please find our social pages and re-share.

Mitchell County got hammered and like the smaller jurisdictions just doesn’t have the resources and technical expertise that a few of the other counties do. You are doing Gods work. Safe travels.

I think Spruce Pine is a great location to go to. Thank you for helping out.

I have some family in Mitchell County and many are worried about what is next. There are a ton of organizations focusing on Watauga and Buncombe county right now but the smaller outlier counties are not getting what they need. Watauga and Buncombe (with Buncombe being the hardest hit as well probably) are the highest populated so I understand why they get the main attention.

I think it will be up to the churches and local organizations to hold it down until other resources are able to make their way out.

Saw some videos about TFR (temporary flight restrictions) and it appears true. I’ve been seeing private helicopters non-stop over the past several days and haven’t seen 1 today, only a lone Blackhawk fly over Boone so far. Anyone know why they’d implement a TFR? Those folks have been out saving people and doing supply drops in the most crucial areas. What’s the reasoning for this???

Henderson County has more than twice the population of Watauga and got hammered. Destruction and multiple fatalities. In human and financial impact they will be behind Buncombe.

Done! I also grabbed some Watermelon, Peach and Blackberry moonshine. I’m not much of a shine drinker but we’ll give it a go

Awesome! All three of those are good straight up out of the jar, over ice, or with mixers. Watermelon is good with Coke or Diet Coke, Blackberry is good with Coke or Diet Coke and awesome with lemonade and Peach is good with sweet tea. All over ice. Hopefully we'll get some action with the donations, we have a pretty decent social media following. Thanks!

I've been doing a lot with Henderson. They received more rain over those days than Buncombe. There are so many needs up that way and without getting political, alot of the needs aren't being met. Every little bit matters, but I encourage everyone to send money or supplies through churches, even if you aren't the religious type. I promise this is the best way to help people directly.

Because there have been at least 30 mid air close calls in the past 6 days in the mtns. Peoples intentions and actions are good but when everyone is acting outside official channels it complicates matters.

The entire concept of money is often amazing and yet baffling to me. A horrible event like this brings out the awesome great aspects of the human race but the money side is crazy to me. There are people with plenty of money in their bank accounts up in the mountains but if they are somewhat isolated with no water or power that money is meaningless right now. The FEMA $750 payment is a ridiculous joke. I know someone here who had flooding a few years ago and a representative came to their property and “offered” them $100. A $750 one timer that has to be applied for by someone with either nothing or even the means to apply for it is beyond insulting. I am one who also realistically thinks that the government can’t simply dole out billions every time a mass disaster happens but what is needed is a major effort to at least restore water and power. I have no idea what you do for massive loss of property. This is beyond comprehension.
