The Perils of Everyweek Existence: How Does One Schedule?

Unread post by T-Dog » Tue Aug 13, 2013 2:08 pm

This week a dissecting view at the men's basketball schedule, looking at how four sub-D1 games could happen and the other factors in play. This also includes SoCon and Sun Belt bylaws on the matter. Then a look at football and the limited info available on it, fanfest news, the idiocy of the FCS polls, other sports' notes and much more.

I have no inside knowledge on this - especially how it works at APP - but I doubt Capel makes the schedule --- I would guess he has input for sure --- I have a very close friend who is a head basketball coach at a big-time BCS level program - He has been very successful and whereas he has a great deal of input in his schedule, he does not create the entire schedule - this is usually a job for the AD or a very high person in the AD department ---

Still trying to figure out how we can even be in the FCS polls when we are not FCS any longer.

The way I understand it is football schedules are, for the most part, made by athletics directors, but basketball, and other sports schedules, are made by the coaches.

Are you referring to APP? - as I mentioned, I have no knowledge of how APP does it ---

It's kind of how it goes at every school, the way it's been explained to me.

It certainly could be that way - as I wrote earlier the only current situation I know personally is the major BCS program where my good friend is head coach and he does not complete the schedule - now granted he has ESPN, etc. working out some of the big non-conf games but he does little with the "filler part of the schedule" - someone in the AD dept completes that part ---

We should try and put together schedules like USA's.

Our biggest problem will probably be the size of KBS. Only actual seats will be considered, no matter how many we can pack onto a hill. Going to be rough scheduling.

Sections 108 and 109 are for visitors. Do you know how many seats are in those two sections?

You do realize that this is a basketball schedule discussion, correct?

This shows the problem with our basketball program. There is plenty of interest in football but BB just does not have a strong following. Please understand I mean no disrespect but the interest is just not there. Most every discussion just turns to football and I am very guilty of that myself. When you can't get to the games or even see them on TV it is hard to keep an interest. So now we have an empty arena and D 1 teams don't like to come play in empty arenas either. That does not help scheduling.

I know you have an agenda to promote KBS expansion, but someone started a thread about how WKU scheduled Vandy at home. They have 22K seats.

~1,200. To get a ECU or Wake to come to Boone we are going to have to guarantee 3,000 if not 5,000 tickets for their fans. If you take the 3 bottom sections and 4 top sections nearest the field house on the east side you get to 3,500 seats. We would have to add 2,500 seats to the north endzone (could be temporary for one game) to get to 3,500 for them. Now 5,000 would be a problem unless you stattered them out to the top 20 rows of the corners in the west stands as well.

We need more seats, but to do so we need more money to do it right. I don't want us to put a bandaid on a problem, it needs to be a long-term solution that looks like a nice division stadium.

Thanks for the info. I wonder how many tickets WKU had to guarantee Vandy?

I would think it would be easier to schedule Vandy or some other out of state school similar to them, because they may not demand as many tickets if their fans have to travel a longer distance. Wake and ECU have lots of fans within a 2 hour or less driiving distance to Boone, so they would probably make the trip.

In addition as stated earlier we still have a considerable amount to pay off for the last expansion. I agree with you 100%. We need to wait and do it right.

One thing that is interesting is that Charlotte gave NC Central 100 tickets. Yes, ONE HUNDRED. Unless they start putting up temp seats everywhere, I don't see how they're going to give ODU or WKU the tickets mandated by the conference.

Here's the C-USA rules.
Complimentary Tickets To Visiting Teams. The host institution shall provide the visiting institution with 400 complimentary tickets using its best efforts to provide the best seats available, and shall make 1600 tickets available for sale by
the visiting institution.
All the Sun Belt rules says is about the 300 complimentary tickets to visiting teams and doesn't specify tickets for sale. We could do 2,000 no problem.
