Do you speak Southern Appalachian Highland or were you born east of I-77? (or not in the south east.)

I grew up in Catawba County and that typically in the Southern Appalachian Highlands accent. I have moved away from wash rag but it still sneaks in. I have to physically think about it when in civilized society so I say wash cloth. My wife from upstate NY likely thought I was a slack-jawed yokel when I first uttered those words. My daughters growing up in Guilford County does not have my speech.

I couldn’t even begin to care what someone thinks of me based on my speech or accent.

I generally embrace my voice and accent and such. This might be the one exception, and I am not sure it is an exception where I am concerned as much as I find it interesting. I can't even remember what brought this topic up, but this message board is the largest group that is easy to connect with for me online to ask this type of question.

Based on responses there is some variance within the region, which is almost always the case. I do find these things interesting.

Love it…makes me miss when good old J Cline would post humorous threads like this.

I was literally thinking about him when I posted this question and I almost named it something like the J Cline Word Choice thread and then I thought that might be a bit harsh as it might have come across a bit less than a nice honor to him.

100%. There wasn't a slight snide remark anywhere though. Mcleansville needs to work on his delivery.

That has always been one of the coolest things about Appalachian State University and the state of North Carolina as a whole, you never know what sounds are going to come out of someone's face or their word choice for that matter. Take the interviews after Helene. You never knew what the person being interviewed was going to sound like. Some of the interviewers sounded less well-spoken than the people they were interviewing.
