Good to see Dr Mammola as well as two anthropologists on the list. Does anyone know if these profs will get paid or have benefits as emeriti?

It may have changed in recent years; especially since the state budget crunch and the stagnant economy. It used to vary from college to college and department to department; maybe within departments. Some, I know still get contracts to continue teaching on a part-time basis. Some just want to move on to other places and/or endeavors. Some have major, major health issues to face.

Lots of things can be involved--unfinished research, grants, seniority. I've seen a professor emeritus get a small office--while others in the same department got a wall plaque. That was, admittedly, during the administration of another chancellor. There wasn't, isn't and never will be, enough space for very many to get an office.

Makes sense.

In my experience working at two large state universities, emeritus status means that you will still have access to your .edu email account, the library, lab/office space and not much more. At my current school, they throw in free parking (usually $120/month).

One of the main reasons to apply for emeritus status is so that research programs can be continued.

It is not a paid position unless it is grant funded. It is true that emeriti are sometimes hired back as adjuncts to teach undergrad or graduate level courses.

It is also intended to honor faculty who have made a significant impact on the department, college, university or discipline.
