A Day of Lasts

Unread post by 8993 » Mon Jun 30, 2014 10:11 am

It's a day of lasts for Appalachian State.

It's our last day as a member of the Southern Conference, a conference we have called home for 43 years now since 1971.

It's also our last day with Chancellor Kenneth E. Peacock. Peacock has been with us for 31 years when he began teaching in the Walker College of Business in 1983. He then became our beloved Chancellor in July of 2004, sticking with us for nine years.

On that note, what do you have to say to the Southern Conference and/or Chancellor Peacock as your final sendoff? Any memories you wish to share?

With my best Bob Hope voice;

"thanks for the memories"

The Socon was certainly good for ASU and also the right fit for many years. We have had unprecedented exposure in a lot of good ways. I will always respecfully dislike Furple or in the words of Appsolutely, "Furman (still) sucks." For me mainly because they beat us so many times in some very close games. I wish that ECU, Bill & Mary, and Richmond would have hung around for a few more years with us but there is nothing anyone can do about that now. I believe that ASU, along with some of the other members, helped bring the league up a notch or two. I did not particularly like the direction by the Socon leadership for the last several years but that also is now in the past.

Ken Peacock in my opinion was the type leader we needed when he took office. He recognized the opportunities we had at the moment and did a great job of helping enthuse the student body and alumni in ways that we have rarely seen before, at least for an extended number of years. My hats off to him for a job well done and I hope he has a long, healthy, and happy retirement doing whatever he wants to do.

Hello Chancellor Everts and Hello Sun Belt.

I'm too much of a newbie to say much about the SoCon, though I heartily believe it's time to move on.

Chancellor Peacock is another story. Our son enrolled at App in the fall of 2005. The infectious enthusiasm shown by Chancellor Peacock and everyone around him was certainly a big part of our falling in love with all things Appalachian. I caught Appalachian fever and cannot see a cure (nor do I want one :D ) through Chancellor Peacock's shameless advocacy for the university he served.

When university budgets were being cut deeply across the state, Chancellor Peacock was a constant voice of reason in Raleigh at the same time he was cultivating donors to help fill in some of the holes created by the budget cuts. The NC Teaching Fellows program was dismantled at the state level; Appalachian created its own teaching fellows program through the help of some very generous donors.

My hat is off to anyone who can earn his doctorate in taxation. To be able to earn that doctorate, lead a business school, and then lead a university in the manner in which Chancellor Peacock has led is a feat indeed! Thanks for the memories and the launching pad to Appalachian's attainment of even greater things!
If serving is beneath you, then leading is beyond you.

This might be the last SoCon post about App sports with a Boone byline. Posted today.

EDIT: Maybe there will a ton of articles about App wrestling on the SoCon website for as long as we have wrestling and the SB does not ever pick this sport up.

I'm sorry, but looking at the Southern Conference's Twitter, Facebook, and homepage, it has become clear to me how bitter they are that Appalachian, Georgia Southern, Elon, and Davidson are leaving. They have made already removed all references to the five of us, taken our logos off the site (although we are technically members for another six hours,) and have given us no farewells.

The SoCon needs to take note of what Conference USA is doing for their departing members.

Thank goodness. I've hated that site since the day it came on. To busy, too hard to find stuff when you need it fast. I sure hope the next layout improves on all that. The way it's been, I've only gone on there as a last resort.

Well it is 12:02 am and no sign of any changes. In the words of GOB, "Come ON"
