I would assume you are "talking" about weighted GPA's and the kids you have averaged have indicated they are "applying" to the said school....or is this actual kids enrolled at said universities?

indeed weighted..."standard" classes are almost non-existent these days. At my school the standard classes have much lower level students...It seems that everyone is in "honors" classes, which are probably similar to the old standard classes from my days 20 something years ago. I'm also at a school where a large # of kids take AP level classes and have a pretty decent pass rate compared to the rest of the state. Many kids are just GPA grabbers, not necessarily learners. I'm not sure that many college professors would care for that mentality. It's just the way it is in this age of testing and accountability.

I got the info from our counseling dept. I took it as the entering (enrolled) freshman gpa's...don't hold me to it, though.

UNCA is the surprising one in IMHO. They are a much smaller school and their SAT's use to be quite higher and I would have thought their GPA's would have been too.

You need to get this from the Admissions Dept of App........

I wish UNCC people would stop trying to compare their academics to App's. It's like when WCU used to compare their football team to App's. No matter how one-sided it is, the mere comparison is offensive.

This isn't exactly the right thread to post this in but it's close enough.

Back during the spring I spent many days during my searches reading through hundreds of tweets from WCU people talking about how a new study that was released showed that WCU was the hardest school in NC to get into. They sited the study as saying the acceptance rate at WCU was 38% as opposed to UNC-CH at 69%...App and State at 68%...and it listed a few other UNC schools in the 50-60% range. They were VERY proud. There was only one problem. They were misunderstanding the actual study. It was a study showing the acceptance rate of students who had been accepted to multiple schools (everyone knows that the normal student applies to multiple schools). In simple terms 68% of students who were accepted to App chose to go to App. 69% accepted to CH chose to go to CH and so on. WCU was actually at the bottom of the list, bless their little hearts.

I found a link to the study and checked it out since I knew App had had a record number of applicants for this years class and, with the number of applicants to open spots, there was no way it could possibly add up to a 68% acceptance rate. After reading the study it made sense. Got a good laugh out of it also. I had a link to it but I can't find it right now. It's on here somewhere so I'll come across it eventually but seeing this thread made me think of it.

I firmly believe you can get a very good education at any of our State schools in North Carolina...even with all the cuts. But, to add salt to the wounds of those poor souls graduating from Western I'll mention something that happened shortly after I graduated (a long time ago). I was working with a Western grad who was making fun of a recent scandal revealing a number of counterfeit diplomas had been sold with falsified transcripts, etc. He thought it was too funny that the schools hit with this problem were UNC, NCSU and Appalachian. I laughed, not a bit surprised, as I told him the reason Western wasn't hit: no one would want to buy a diploma from there; it's just not worth it.

My favorite threat to get my HS junior to study harder is that I will not feel sorry for her when the only place she can get into is Western. Then I say hell no if that is the only place you get in you just won't go because I am not having a can't in my house.

UNC-A is still an excellent school. I think those GPAs suggest more about App than they do about UNC-A.

I've taught some at UNCA part-time. It is considered a good place to go for a liberal arts education at a public school price. However, from my experience, there are definitely bright kids...but, they probably excel more in the language/verbal areas on test scores, whereas NCSU freshman probably excelled more in the math areas. UNCA also seems to have a certain slacker mentality, IMHO. It don't think I would enjoy going there as a student. Not much social life on campus, but, the city of A-ville is great. Campus life just seems to lack the vitality that I enjoyed as a student at App. I suppose it has to do with the actual college town, residential feel in Boone.

I've also worked at Elon, which is considered a very good school these days. But, I felt that App provided a more rigorous, well-rounded education....just a different culture completely. More country club than academic IMO.
