I realize this board is primarily for our athletic endeavors, but I feel the need to remind the Mountaineer Nation that one of our own is missing. Regardless of the circumstances of her disappearance I hope she is found soon and healthy. To the perp who may have caused this problem I hope your caught and strung up on Howard's Knob.

I started a thread about this last week. And last I heard, the authorities did not suspect foul play at all.

This is the first time I have seen the details of the latest sexual assault. This sounds like an attack during broad daylight by an unknown assailant. Maybe I am wrong but that is the way it reads. Just can't understand why it was not immediately reported.

As for Anna. This is a nightmare for her family and hheartbreaking for the App family. I truly hope these two cases are not connected.

They aren't. The sexual assault was reported two days ago after allegedly occurring on Aug 28. Anna's been missing since last Wednesday.

The family said in a press conference that she was suffering signs of depression recently. That's not good.

If she's not in or around Boone, it's not going to be easy to find her, especially if she didn't want to be found. Her family and friends came by tailgate Saturday handing out fliers. They're all over town. I hope for the best but fear for the worst.

It has made national news. I had an old friend from college living in Upper Nyack, New York call me and asked me if I knew anything about this situation.
The Charlotte Observer has been all over it. There's an article in there about the situation everyday

I wonder where the info about Anna being sexually assaulted is coming from? I had heard a family member say she was very sad but had not heard the reason. The world is a tough place these days.

It's not unusual for kids in college their first year or so to suffer from depression, to say the least.

If someone definitely saw her just outside her dorm a couple of days ago it seems odd they didn't follow her.

No credible source I've seen has said anything about Anna being the victim of a sexual assault. That's just people misreading or confusing one story with another.

Anna broke up with her boyfriend the weekend before she went missing. Her friends characterize her as being in a state of depression.

The most recent flier being circulated states she was sexually assaulted and that was the source of her depression. See above post by firemoose.

Just relaying information gleaned from people who know her.

Understood, that is what I had heard as well. That is why I was surprised to see the info on the flier.

I wonder as well. There haven't been any articles or police releases that I've seen that that invoke sexual assault in the Anna case.

I am not chastising anybody, but I have a daughter up there, and I would encourage everybody to refrain from speculation at this point. I know message boards are meant for discussion, but this is different. Again, I am not pointing fingers or trying to guilt anybody...just think, before you post. Thanks...

I don't really see any speculation here. If it is true that she was assaulted and silenced as her family and friends put on the fliers that are being distributed, the best thing we can do is talk about it to our kids and raise awareness to this problem. Many people do not believe that this is a problem or believe that most accusations of sexual assault on campuses are just a result of morning after second thoughts. In fact studies suggest that most sexual assaults on college campuses are never even reported. The harsh reality of the situation is that rape on college campus has basically become an unprosecuted offense. All one has to do is be seen in public drinking with the target and then be alone when the assault occurs. Charges will never be filed in a he said she said if alcohol is involved. Universities are dealing with this more often lately by charging students with violation of student code of conduct.

I have a daughter at Appalachian also and I have had this discussion with her. This is a real threat and if you have not had this conversation you should. I think everyone who has posted in this thread is truly concerned about this child's well being and the family's pain. Why else would you open the thread?

One can sense a bit of worry from all the parents (and mostly fathers I bet on this board.) that have daughters at App. I generally don't let these things bother me, and try and not get wrapped up in the cycle of fear, but I am bothered by this. I will be honest.

It was reported on WCNC TV in Charlotte this morning that her parents confirmed that she told them she had been sexually assaulted.

Sorry... I was too lazy to check and figured someone had.

One other thing that I might add here and I will preface my comments by saying I'm not up on NC laws but:

I noticed last weekend that ASU is a "gun free campus." At least that was the sign at the book store. If this were not the case and students were allowed to conceal/carry then who knows......maybe the outcome could have been different.
