Missed the Game, but.............

I truly regret missing the Arkansas State game, but I was spending the day and night on an aircraft carrier at Patriots Point, SC along with 400 Boy and Cub Scouts. The Yorktown is a small aircraft carrier by today's standards, but it sure seemed large to most of us except the berths. There was about a foot and a half clearance from the mattress to the frame above each unit. How the sailors endured those conditions, I'll never figure out. It sure reinforces my appreciation for all our military both past and present.

That's an awesome trip, did it several years ago. As a large person, just didn't like the sleeping space. I was miserable and it was only for one night. My hat's off to those guys/gals.

Did that trip a few years ago as well. Those berths were definitely not meant for a 6'5" individual. I slept on a bottom berth with my legs in the aisle. Gave me a real appreciation for what those sailors had to go through.

The bottom berths were all taken by the Cubs or other leaders, unfortunately.

Did you check out the Medal of Honor presentation? That is pretty impressive. I was there this summer for the 5th or 6th time and IIRC they now let folks have their pictures made inside the cockpit of the planes.

I've done that as well. I definitely had the royal treatment since the ladies who chaperoned the trip were housed in the officers' quarters. We had real bunks.

My 6'2" husband was in the crew quarters in one of the "slings" as were our sons. My hat's off to our servicemen who manned those ships. My appreciation of the submariners is even greater.

FTR, the submarine on site is to be hauled out to sea to help create a coral reef within a month or so.
As an aside, my 9 year old whom you met at the Elon game a few years back enjoyed the destroyer best.

Not only were the quarters cramped, often times were shared with other crew members. Since everyone was on 12 hour shifts, when one would work the other would sleep. When the other would work, one would sleep in the same rack. Also, an F-4 Phantom from my old squadron is on the deck for display. It is the one with three shamrocks painted on the tail.

Wife and I accompanyed our two boys a few years ago for a scout trip and spent the weekend on the ship. Boys had a blast. Have to say it was tough sleeping for a few nights. I am of average height and had to watch my head on several occasions. Utmost respect for the brave men who spent long stretches at sea on the ship. It was a neat experience. Hard to imagine spending extended time on the submarine. Those guys were tough!

Yep, I did my time on the Yorktown, and it is a great trip for the Scouts. Here is the secret…. Take the top bunk, and pull the mattress down on to the floor – and a must is ear plugs!! Old men snoring in a steel room is not very quiet!
The woman have it better, they sleep in the officers’ quarters.
