Campaign for Appalachian

Interesting to note that while the campaign surpassed $200 million mark, athletics fell short of its $50 million mark.

I am sure what I am about to say is not going to go over well on what is basically a athletic message board with some discussion on other things Appalachian. But to be honest, and I just got that email myself, I was happy to see the numbers work the way they did. We raised more for athletics than the arts, but art was over as was the goal for academics also surpassed. It would have been sad to me to know that athletics was over the goal and academics was under the goal given the amount that was set aside for each of the 3 pots of money. Had athletics only had a goal of 5 million and still not met that goal, then that would be a bit of a pause.hapapp wrote:Interesting to note that while the campaign surpassed $200 million mark, athletics fell short of its $50 million mark.
As long as they are supporting App I would not have a problem with that, though I never gave to Yosef directly (before I was purchasing tickets, merchandise, internet streams) until we made the move. Now I give a small symbolic amount.mtnjax wrote:What are the chances of anti-FBS donors redirecting their donations away from athletics?
I know that as of a year-or-so ago, fewer than 10% of alums gave. Ours is a pretty poor percentage compared to other UNC schools.McLeansvilleAppFan wrote:I know having alumni give helps in some way with funding from Raleigh. I was told any gift counts for both my wife and I since we are both App grads. I was going to write two checks if that was not the case to make sure we were both counted. But I did ask directly the last time I got a phone call.
On the Yosef Club there are about 8500 donors based on where I stand in the # out of 8500 YC ranking. Most are alumni I assume and then we have the Daphne's of the world we all love for giving so much to her adopted alma mater. But when I give to YC that is one ranking and I assume that is only counted as one alumni giving. The point being that if we included all the two-alumni families I wonder what the percent of alumni giving to athletics would be.
Other question: What percent of alumni give to the academic side? I have read this number before in the last year or two but I can't remember where and what the number was.
I wasn't bemoaning the fact but merely found it interesting that the other two areas exceeded their goals.McLeansvilleAppFan wrote:I am sure what I am about to say is not going to go over well on what is basically a athletic message board with some discussion on other things Appalachian. Did not mean to imply that you were. I was just giving my own personal views. And even if you were bemoaning the fact that is fine with me. To each their own. I hope I have never been nor ever become the type of App fan that challenges others as if their priorities are not at some level and anything less than that is bad. We all do what we can do at the level that interests us. I know what I do and don't do for App. Overall I am proud of what I do and only ask we all give at least something to some part of App, and I am sure you do that.hapapp wrote:I wasn't bemoaning the fact but merely found it interesting that the other two areas exceeded their goals.McLeansvilleAppFan wrote:I am sure what I am about to say is not going to go over well on what is basically a athletic message board with some discussion on other things Appalachian. I was thinking it was around 20%. If you are correct that is a shame.HeffnerIV wrote:I know that as of a year-or-so ago, fewer than 10% of alums gave. The Yosef Club is actually below 3,000 current members. We keep setting the goal at 3,000 and just missing the mark. Cue Daphne's impassioned speech on joining Yosef.Saint3333 wrote:Yosef Club members is well under 5,000 current members. That 8,500 number includes all members that have ever given.
Less than 5% give to the Yosef Club, a number that is half of what ECU sees.

10% may be right for overall alumni giving. The 5% figure is more accurate for athletics. We, too, give to both areas each year ... but we don't count in the alumni giving rate.appchicago wrote: Per the US News rankings (http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandrevie ... t-colleges),which tracks alumni giving percentage, we're right at 10%, which could be much better. You might be surprised to know that that rate is as high or higher than every school in the UNC system except for Chapel Hill (22%), Elizabeth City State (14%), and NC State (11%). NC Central and A&T have the same percentage. We're ahead of ECU, UNCC, UNCG, UNCA, Western, UNCW, etc.
So, you know. Lots of room to improve, but there's some context. I'm no millionaire, but I give a little every year to both athletics and academics.
When it first started it stood for ten. Now, the minimum donation is $140.00.The info in the link is interesting.SpeedkingATL wrote:It would be nice if some kind of IPTAY (I Pay Twenty A Year-Clemson) program could be implemented for the Yosef Club
The folks in the planned giving office are fabulous! The hubs and I have also put Appalachian State in our wills. It's certainly not the magnitude that some others can give (the term "paltry" comes to mind) and doesn't leave our children and grandchildren out of the equation either. Like you said, it's a way to be sure that what you leave behind helps in a way that honors your heart.AtlantaMountaineer wrote:It's funny that this topic came up this morning as I am currently updating my will and had a call scheduled with the Appalachan Development office on how I could split my gift designations between athletics and academics. Being single with no children I really wanted to leave something to the school I love so much when I depart. The office was very helpful in explaining how best to accomplish this. My friend asked me how I could be so into this since he finds this type of discussion morbid and uncomfortable. I told him it made me happy knowing that my gift would be used the way I desired.
Thanks for posting.TheMoody1 wrote:When it first started it stood for ten. Now, the minimum donation is $140.00.The info in the link is interesting.SpeedkingATL wrote:It would be nice if some kind of IPTAY (I Pay Twenty A Year-Clemson) program could be implemented for the Yosef Club
