This is starting to happen way, way too frequently. It is with tremendous sadness that I report the Appalachian Family's loss of Fred White, of Winston-Salem. A member of the Class of '65, Fred played baseball for the Apps from '60-'64 under three different head coaches. Fred and I became friends when he was a 3rd qtr soph and I was a 1st qtr freshman. Our friendship developed slowly as I was a North Rowan Cavalier and he was a hated Boyden Yellow-Jacket. After two quarters on top floor Justice and a couple of years as suitemates on 3rd floor Newland, we were just fellow Mountaineers and close friends. I was an usher in his marriage ceremony to Rosemary; as he was in my marriage ceremony to Pauletta. Our friendship has remained strong over the years. This sad news caught me off-guard. Fred was one of the most upbeat, cheerful and positive persons I've ever known. And he dearly loved his family. Those qualities define a great husband, father, grand-father and friend.
Applalachian has lost a true friend, a loyal alumnus and a big fan. RIP, Fred.
