"APPALACHIAN IS NOT A STATE"

In friendly banter with an Ohio student group as we walked back to the tailgate area before the game an OU student asked 'how do you get your name, Appalachian is not a state'. My reply"APPALACHIAN IS A STATE OF MIND", he had no comeback.

The word "State" indicates that we are a public university. You would have to go to some third-rate party school in Ohio to not realize that.

Yeah I've never understood this insult either. It indicates that we are a STATE school. Could have asked him "are Kent and Ball states?"
