Parthenon closing May 7th

Unread post by T-Dog » Thu Apr 07, 2016 6:47 pm

Parthenon, a staple of the trailer bars next to campus, is closing for good on Saturday, May 14th. I knew it wasn't good when they had to close on select Saturday nights to be in compliance (80/20 laws) but to see it go before 9-lives Klondike is amazing.

I'm sure feelings will be mixed on this one.

Glad to see it go... Too many good places in Boone now. Close that crap hole and their crappy owner.

Not a patron of P-Non but those laws are archaic and anti-free market.

The trailer bars need to go. Trashiest part of our school by far and it's right at the main entrance and one of the first things that visitors see. Sorry Tapp, I'm sure you can find a non-portable building somewhere in Boone.

Imo tapps actual building isn't terrible, not great by any means but doesn't look as bad as the other 2. I'm biased but I'd be fine with leaving tapp there and getting rid of Klondike and pnon, which is happening apparently. I had heard a couple years ago the school was buying that land anyways, anyone know if that's true?

I hope it's true. The trailer joints at the main entrance need to go bye-bye and asap. It would be nice to have a classy student hang-out close to HCC, but P-non and K-dke don't measure up in any way--other than location. I hope the univ. buys and bulldozes the trailers, and if nothing else, converts the property to a green space park; while encouraging Tapp Rm to renovate in a serious way. NSLA, Ken Peacock wanted the Hardees property for a parking deck location for HCC. I hope Chancellor Everts has her eye on that property. Every sq. ft. of private property adjoining the main campus needs to be acquired by ASU asap. It's never going to get cheaper!

If I recall correctly the Master Plan has that entire area reserved for a new parking deck.

Many memories as a college student sitting outside and eating a buffalo chicken wrap on Fridays after giving tours as an Ambassador.

I don't have an issue with them.

My memories of the Klondike are of drinking beer on the patio and walking across the street to watch baseball. When the field wasn't flooded, that is.

Speaking of new local owned places, have any of you guys tried the Cardinal? It is on 105 beside the old High Country Inn. Well worth your dollar. Great burgers and other sandwiches. They also have local beers on tap, one of the better beer selections in town and the prices are not bad.

The only proposed parking decks around there are at the Legends/Hoey lot and the Hardees on 321. The 2020 plan is a pipedream anyways.

The big plans for that area is a roundabout.

There was a plan to break ground on a new Faculty St. parking deck (350-400 spaces) behind Hardee's down towards Domino's. From my understanding, the Dept. of Planning & Development denied the request unless the property was completely rezoned.

9.95 for wings seems a little steep, but I didn't try those. They may be large enough to warrant the price. The 6.50 double burger was very good and worth the money. Will be going back for another soon.

Seems like I might be in the minority here, but I'll admit it. I have enjoyed an afternoon at Parthenon as much as anyone. Is it an eyesore? Sure. Is the food good? Damn right it is. The owner has had his problems, but he's always treated our friends and I with respect. I'll miss it dearly.

Klondike forever. Saw quite a few concerts there. If everything in Boone were shiny and new, it wouldn't be Boone. But this is coming from a guy who makes sure to visit Murphy's most times when I'm in town.

I'm only referring to the optics of the place when I trash them. It would be a completely different story if they weren't 50 yards from the main "Appalachian State University" signage and one of the first things people see as they drive on to the campus. I don't think it gives a very good first impression, though I've certainly had fun in all 3 establishments.

Story from the WD. Now it's closing May 7th during final exams.

Wish more local business owners would have the attitude regarding App State that Nick has.
