Re: New PbP Announcers
Congrats to both! Seems unusual not to have the same PbP for football and basketball, though.

Had a feeling Adam would get the football job...works for the company and is an App grad. Plus he did the signing day event.

Plus he's got significant play-by-play experience, including Duke basketball broadcasts. He's a great hire.hapapp wrote:Had a feeling Adam would get the football job...works for the company and is an App grad. Plus he did the signing day event.

Does this mean Adam (or RJ) will also be Associate Athletic Director, i.e. an App employee?

Re: New PbP Announcers
I would say that DJ's position as it was, was done away with. Adam is an img employee and will probably stay that way and that is why he is not doing basketball. RJ is a contractor for img and will likely continue to be.sonsofyosef wrote:Does this mean Adam (or RJ) will also be Associate Athletic Director, i.e. an App employee?
I think DJ's job will be redistributed with the coming reorganization.
That's what I do. I gripe and I know things.

Re: New PbP Announcers
Just as an aside, I'd like to see ASU discontinue use of the "national search" disclaimer on position (job) announcements. There was a time when it was nice and reassuring to see. That passed on to a time when it was expected, but disregarded with a wink and nod. Now, it has become downright disingenuous. Embarrassingly disingenuous.
Let the record show that my stated concern is in no way a concern about the individuals named to the P-b-P teams. Just a concern about hiring procedure. In recent years, we've become almost too proficient at doing "national searches" only to find the "best candidate" around the corner and down the hall. Think back a bit, if you care to...

I thought the same thing, but at least we left the building for one of these new hires. That's about as "national" as it gets for App.asu66 wrote:Just as an aside, I'd like to see ASU discontinue use of the "national search" disclaimer on position (job) announcements. Re: New PbP Announcers
I agree that they have completely destroyed their credibility when it comes to using the term national search. In this case it was needlessly tossed out there. I think most here would agree we wanted somebody with ties and even a passion for the university. Not some stranger hired because they merely possessed talent. I am pleased with the results, nationally vetted or not.

Re: New PbP Announcers
Just throwing it out there but has anyone checked with HR to see what we are required to say when advertising a job posting? We're a public university and part of the UNC System. The job listing is open to applicants from all over the US and some staff positions are open to international applicants. Doesn't mean we have to or will take someone from CA for the job but by definition any job where applications are open to anyone is a "national and/or international" opening unless you post it otherwise in the listing/description. Again just throwing it out there.

Uh, yeah, I have and I do. Rather frequently, in fact. Former Assoc. V-C Rick Howe talked me into the HR profession years ago and it's still in my blood--even long after retirement. I actually have great empathy with the senior HR officers at App---the accredited SPHRs. They have an impossible task---trying to keep university dept. heads and deans "legal." Their real job is rather akin to herding cats or canning earthworms.

Just because we went local doesn't mean they weren't the best available for what we were willing to pay.

Re: New PbP Announcers
I understand that Chuck, know what you did for work, and that was not meant as a knock on you or anyone. I just meant that any search, unless you say in the job posting that it's internal only or actually listed in the posting that only internal applicants or persons with previous experience at App need apply, is by default a "national' search. I too have some HR experience, not to your level by any means, but I remember how carefully we had to word postings and placement/advertising of listings in order to not get into trouble. And that was years ago. I got forced into the position because no one else wanted it and I wouldn't wish it on anyone, especially in the PC world we live in today. One wrong word and you'll have a hundred different groups breathing down your neck calling you every "ist" word in the book and lawyers will show up the next day. Times have changed so much just in the past few years and I think it's just easier to say it and try and at least look like you are covering your bases.asu66 wrote:Uh, yeah, I have and I do. Nope! Just (1) the Affirmative Action/Equal Employment Opportunity disclaimer;CVAPP wrote:So, is "national search" required?asu66 wrote:Uh, yeah, I have and I do. Rather frequently, in fact. "Appalachian State University is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer. The University does not discriminate in access to its educational programs and activities, or with respect to hiring or the terms and conditions of employment, on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity and expression, political affiliation, age, disability, veteran status, genetic information or sexual orientation."
and (2) the Criminal Background Check disclaimer...
"Any offer of employment to a successful candidate will be conditioned upon the University’s receipt of a satisfactory criminal background report."

Re: New PbP Announcers
I have not ever worked in HR, but I find it hard to believe that the formal online applications have much to do with locating candidates for high-profile jobs like head basketball coach, athletic director, or even radio PbP announcer. I'd be shocked if the real work didn't happen through direct personal contact there.

Re: New PbP Announcers
You know it's the off-season when the use of the term "national" in a press release can garner contention and so much discussion.
On the other hand maybe it's something else entirely. Check the Topic counts for both "Appalachian General Discussion" and "Non-Appalachian General Discussion". Has anyone checked their foreheads lately?
