So you feel that playing a one year so and so from the ACC in UNC this fall is a bigger deal than App State? Wow, nice to know.Yosef10 wrote:All he basically said was its much more motivating for players throughout the summer when the pictures of their first opponents are hanging in the weight room and those pictures are of Clemson, Wisconsin, etc. other than pictures of the Apps & WMUs of the world. Hell, if I was at UGA I'd be considerably more amped up to open with a school the caliber of Clemson than App. Just the life of a G5.WVAppsfan wrote:He has never coached a down as the HC, come the Florida game he probably won't say anything like that. Re: Kirby Smart - App State mention on ESPN
From what I am hearing on local ATL sports radio, UGA is may be looking for a bit more "vocalility" (is that a real word?) from their head coach (Once he gets his feet wet, of course) than they what they got with Richt. That is literally what I heard the other day.

Re: Kirby Smart - App State mention on ESPN
Yes, every now and then I do have to take my Appalachian State shades off to look objectively at things, weird I know. But yeah I'm not breaking news you could ask any P5 coach and they would say the exact same thing as Smart. Not a slight, just the reality.WVAppsfan wrote:So you feel that playing a one year so and so from the ACC in UNC this fall is a bigger deal than App State? 8 wins is below average for LSU, Georgia and Florida. Certainly not well above their average as your post claimed. It's a matter of fact, not opinion. I'm not really sure where the dispute is.Gonzo wrote:Didn't realize 8 wins in the SEC was below average.

Re: Kirby Smart - App State mention on ESPN
He didnt say anything that wasnt true. If we opened with Lenoir Rhyne or some smaller school everyone would be on here griping. Some fans on here get butt hurt every time a larger school says something about us. In life there are big dogs and dogs who want to be big. Right now we are the latter. If I were a UGA fan I would much rather open with a big name school. Quit finding things to be offended over.

Re: RE: Re: Kirby Smart - App State mention on ESPN
I agree, we started a new era last year. So as full FBS we have lost to one P5 team. We get two shots this year. We need to just play solid mistake free ball and that will be a big step forward. I don't want to get to December and have to read about how we did not get smoked because we played one good qtr against Tennessee. If we get beat by Miami and Tennessee so be it but I just want to see us play well and gain some measure of respect. Not be seen as a Saturday off cream puff game.bigdaddyg wrote:I don't think it is reasonable to include any of the games we played against P5's when we were FCS. Michigan not withstanding we were at a decided disadvantage with fewer scholarship players. Obviously ECU is not a P5 but they were a pretty decent G5 both seasons. It will take a while to get the skill players with speed needed to really slug it out with those big boys on a consistent basis. All of the heart and determination in the world can't always make up for the difference in talent and skill. We will get there.

Re: Kirby Smart - App State mention on ESPN
Based on how Georgia played against Georgia Southern last year, I think they should be a little more concerned with beating these smaller schools.
I get where he's coming from though. Name recognition goes a long ways into getting people pumped up about gameday.

Re: Kirby Smart - App State mention on ESPN
Don't know why he would want to mention us. Georgia Southern almost beat them last year and we beat up on Southern pretty good. I can't say that we're on the P5 level, just odd that he would use us as an example.

Kirby wasn't the first to say it, and he won't be the last.

In all fairness, I'd rather play UGA to open the season than Clemson, LSU, or Tennessee.

Could it be because we have better name recognition so our name just came to mind?MJ1988 wrote:Don't know why he would want to mention us. You guys think that his comment might not be directed so much at us as it is against our Week 1 opponent? A school that several outlets have selected as the pre-season SEC-East favorite, ahead of the Dawgs?
