Isn't HIPAA regarding medical records, or at least the part that is being talked about here? If that's the case, then HIPPA is just being used as a scare tactic.Boone Goon wrote: Piece of advice for everyone pointing to HIPPA as justification, stop! It does not apply in this setting.
Not a fan of that $7,000 price tag. It's a 10' x 20' tent. You can buy two tailgating tents with sides for a fraction of the cost.

It would seem athletes have already given up most of their HIPPA confidentiality when injury reports are released to the media.

It does go up quick and the pivot point design takes up little space, though it is more expensive than it needs to be for what it does. Are there tents on the market that have these features?T-Dog wrote:Isn't HIPAA regarding medical records, or at least the part that is being talked about here? Yes HIPAA does matter here. It refers to medical confidentiality and the penalties are severe. I dealt with HIPAA repeatedly as a sports chaplain and had to be very careful. The tent maker may be exploiting the law but to trivialize that law in an athletic context is very unwise.

Re: Athletic Sideline Treatment Tent
It is the Health Information, Patient Privacy Act, aka: HIPAA. The intent was to protect patients from publicly disclosing personal information we would not want others to know about us. For example it used to be common place for doctors offices to have a clip board at the check-in desk where you would write your name and "reason for visit". Anyone could see their neighbor was dealing with some embarrassing issue. At this point its morphed into a government program allowing for frivolous lawsuits and additional mandatory bureaucracies within the healthcare system. I have to complete multiple hours of HIPAA training every year, and I have to track the entire salesforce's training for audit purposes.T-Dog wrote:Isn't HIPAA regarding medical records, or at least the part that is being talked about here? The tent allows players to undress for easier examination by the physicians and trainers. The advantage of this design is it's quick pop-up, drop down ability. If we have space to the corner where it won't obstruct the view of fans but is still closer than having to go back to the locker room I think it makes sense. But the fact it's not a current budget item for the athletic department tells me what I need to know. I think if DG had an extra $7K he wouldn't spend it on this. I mean no disrespect to YesAppCan, but I think DG can prioritize the needs of the athletic department with the coaches and trainers.

As someone with 20+ years in the healthcare field, and 15+ hours of training on the topic, I can confidently tell you its just not the case.appstate77 wrote:Yes HIPAA does matter here. Re: Athletic Sideline Treatment Tent
It is my understanding that the players sign the confidentiality waivers. If they don't then the school is not allowed to disclose the injury to the media. Having said this. HIPAA isn't an issue when it comes to speculation as to an injury. Players are treated on the sidelines all of the time without privacy. If HIPAA were an issue, these tents would be mandated by the law.

Re: Athletic Sideline Treatment Tent
Honestly, I'm not trying to give anyone a hard time. But can this post be serious? The Appalachian State University Football Program, proud owner of a multi million dollar budget, needs donor help to purchase a $5000 tent for sideline use. This is not a statement on the tent, the cost, or whether it is necessary. I have noticed several teams have them and it really is probably a good idea. But here's my point----Mr. Gillen and Coach Satterfield probably know where to find an extra $5k for ANY NECESSARY ITEM the football program may need. If it is needed, it will be there on day one. I suggest all these donors pledge money to provide the cheerleaders with a few hundred t-shirts and a gun with which to shoot them into the crowd to get fans further involved in the game. What do you think?

True. You would think the official health care provider of the mountaineers would love to have a name stuck on it for 25k+ people to see every Saturdaygoapps93 wrote:It has(and should have) corporate sponsorship written all over it. No need for a donation drive.

I have been a part of this board for a very long time... I cannot believe how so many have to be so negative about anything. It doesn't matter the subject. I'm trying to do a GOOD thing for OUR school. If you don't want to help, fine. How about not posting and just ignore? Firemoose thought I should post it here. I'm willing to bet most of those complaining wouldn't give if the tent was $250 dollars.

Re: Athletic Sideline Treatment Tent
For anyone suggesting a tailgate tent, you should also figure out how 1 person can set-up or take down a tailgate tent with sides in less than 5 seconds. Otherwise just stop with the comparison, you're embarrassing yourself.
Is $5.5k steep? Yeah on the surface it appears a hefty price tag to pay, but it's specious to then compare it to a $200 tailgate tent, or a $1500 10x20 that undoubtedly takes several people several minutes to setup and deconstruct. Let's at least try to keep to comparing a Golden Delicious to a Granny Smith and keep the Navels out of it.
As for prioritizing of the football dollars, perhaps Satt and DG had earmarked some money for a tent like this, but it's on a long list of other things of need or nice-to-haves. When a generous supporter comes along without detailed line by line knowledge of the Athletic Department's budget and offers to pony up a significant amount of cash for something multiple teams can use, the smart Director says "Wow that's awesome and incredibly generous! Yes, we'd love to work with you to make this happen." Then goes and spends the money on other needed things that may have gotten cut from the budget.
When a fellow fan posts a proposal to buy something that would be helpful for our student athletes and staff across several sports programs, I'd hoped other fans would say "Wow that's generous and awesome! I've other ideas on how I'd like my donations spent, but you rock it and lets get that cash flow rolling!"

Re: Athletic Sideline Treatment Tent
This thread is a really disheartening read. A guy trying to do a good thing for App State, who is literally putting his money where his mouth is, is getting blasted because he wasn't willing to settle for anything but the best for our student athletes.
YesAppCan, once pay day rolls around I'll pitch in something, though I can't promise much.

Steve, I really appreciate all your efforts in this. I'll be glad to donate what I can on a college student budget. I'm glad (and personally thankful) that App Nation has people like you who are willing to step up for something like this.

I admire your courage to share a conviction because doing so makes one a target.
Just donated $100. If you can't get the support, I'm prepared to go further.

Re: Athletic Sideline Treatment Tent
Has anyone checked to make sure that the sports medicine staff actually wants this? Not the ADs. The actual people who you think would use it.
I can speak with very high certainty that non-football medical staffs will not use it. Soccer was specifically mentioned. The seasons occur at the same time as football, so it couldn't be stored at the soccer complex. The thing would be such a pain in the butt to move back and forth that it would not be worth using at all. There are essentially already vision-reduced benches at the soccer field, so there isn't really a confidentiality issue.
With that being said, if the football medical staff wants it... shoot... go for it. I'm glad the sports medicine department is getting some attention, and I'm sure they would graciously accept any donation. Perhaps this money should be unassigned?
