Record vs ULM has absolutely no bearing on this game. Also, how many points Wake and App scored in the 90's or early 2000s has no bearing on how the game this weekend will go. Wake fans are feeling pretty good. They have the most offensive weapons and flow they have had since 2008. Good reason to be optimistic about scoring points. We have struggled to score in two of our 3 games this year. That's why wake fans think the score will turn out that way. Fans typically think they're school will do good and the opposing school wont do good.

Clearly there are more of us worried about our lack of offensive identity and execution after these two games.

As Goose has pointed out several times, we have averaged just 11 points against P5's since 2007.NattyBumppo'sRevenge wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2017 8:11 amGot on their prediction thread yesterday. Most of their posters have us scoring 10 or less and have them scoring 30 or more. Not sure where the superiority is coming from. Vegas has us as a 4 point underdog. We both have 2 votes in the coaches poll. Over our history, Wake has never beaten us by more than 17 points and that was when we had 20 less scholarship players. We also have a better record against ULM...
Most points scored in a single game against a P5 in that span is game #2 at Michigan where we put up a paltry 14.

And who were those P5s? Is Wake anywhere near the level of those P5's? Michigan, Clemson, Tennessee, Miami, Georgia? They beat Utah State, Boston College, and Presbyterian. I just don't understand the hype.

I get it, Wake is much better than Georgia this year.dubs21 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2017 8:27 amRecord vs ULM has absolutely no bearing on this game. Re: The sad delusions of the FBS bottom dwellers - Weak Forest
I think this is an example of rose colored glasses. TxSt is not a good team. They struggled to beat Houston Baptist by 9. A team that lost to "powerhouse" Abiliene Christian 24-3. We were favored by 20+ points, no reason it should have been that close.
**To be clear, the rest of this is not aimed at biggie **
I don't mean to be a downer. This is not Wake of even 2 years ago. They are averaging something like 44 ppg while we have yet to gel in any facet of our offensive game. If they are going to score points, we have not shown the ability to respond in kind and that's bothersome.
Those scoffing at their prediction thread and pointing to the vegas spread will do well to remember that Miami was only favored by 3 and we all know the result of that one. Based on our previous experiences with P5 competition, and the way our offense has played thus far, it is not out of the realm of possibility that this one ends up being 35-7, 35-10. This maybe the perfect storm for them with an experienced team with a lot of fire power the same year we lose Cox and start two freshman OL. I hope I am wrong obviously.
The main thing that bothers me is if we lose this game by a score like what I mentioned, the same people downplaying Wake are going to be the same people saying "Wake's got a shot at the ACC" etc. The spin machine will start almost instantly. These individuals will place no blame on the Apps or the game plan we implement. And they will attack those that question decisions or express disappointment as disloyal fans. We need to be realistic about where we are right now, but we also figure out a way to win these type of games if we want to become the program all of us hope to be. It'd be incredible to see everything click into place on Saturday.

Re: The sad delusions of the FBS bottom dwellers - Weak Forest
I think it's totally reasonable to ask how we're going to score on them. I don't think it's going to happen if we see the same personnel and game plan that we've seen thus far this year, and in past P5 matchups. Now if we get a WR or two back from injury and/or open up the playbook a bit... This Wake D is good, but the team as a whole isn't on the level athletically of the other P5s we've faced recently, even those that had down years.
I don't think they're going to score a ton of points on us either, though. I think our D is legit. The caveat is that we can't leave them on the field all day with repeated three-and-outs. That's where some past games have gotten away from us.

I live in Winston and work with several Wake grads. This game means a lot to me personally.
It's unsurprising that their message boards have some garbage opinions strewn about. Just your daily reminder that the internet is like 18% useful information and 60% sewer where anonymity allows otherwise-reasonable people to be awful*. I could do without the snobbery and tired mountain man cliches. I've never had a single Wake fan take a swipe at the value of my degree in person, but there's no way of knowing if their nastiest message board clowns even went to college. You sure can't tell it by the strength of their prose.
I like Ed Hardin's take in the Journal, and think this could be a valuable series. Local matchups are a lot of fun.
(*I know that doesn't add up to 100. The other 22% of the internet is pretty much cat videos and porn.)

That 22% figure feels too low.

Bro, I didn't say anything about Georgia. We played better against Georgia than ND did. I just gave reasons why wake fans might be optimistic.

We lost by 21 and it might have been double that if they hadn't pulled their starters. ND lost by 1 after leading for much of the game.

Yeah, i was being a little over zealous with that comment. But ND who had 3 guys rush for over 100 yards the game before uga, had 50 yards total rushing. We were a little more successful. Thats more what i meant.

Re: The sad delusions of the FBS bottom dwellers - Weak Forest
I really don't think our lack of offensive output can be blamed on our receivers. Yes, Meadors is a great threat, as is evans, but it's not like we don't have other speed/weapons. Malik Williams has been solid, and every bit as fast as Evans and more than meadows, jalen Virgil has been impressive, Hennigan has proven to be a solid receiver. I still think our offensive struggles are due to the new o line. Replacing the pieces from last year has not/ is not seamless. I think the coaching staff has to stop being stubborn, understand the o line can't open the holes for the run game as they have in the past, and get our short/mid range pass game opened up, and then try to get the run game going.EastHallApp wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2017 10:21 amI think it's totally reasonable to ask how we're going to score on them. I think both are potentially factors, but just mentioned WRs because we've been missing some guys there. On the OL we just have to hope the guys we've been rolling with will get better.

Defensively, we did pretty well considering we prepared for one QB and yet the back up played pretty much the rest of the game.EastHallApp wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2017 10:46 amWe lost by 21 and it might have been double that if they hadn't pulled their starters. Now this guy is a true, fairly objective WFU football fan:
I'm pretty excited for this game. We can schedule teams that we can lose to like Utah State or ULM, or we can schedule teams that we can lose to like App State.
The latter provides fans with a great chance to travel and see their team play, while also bantering with co-workers, former high school classmates, etc.
I love the mentality of playing anybody anywhere.
People just like to complain about everything. When we schedule too easy people bitch, when we schedule too hard people bitch.
Just play games that fans like to see that we also have a good chance of winning---this is one of those games, and I also believe we have a good amount to gain on the recruiting trail if we go to Boone and take care of business.
